President Bush stepped into the middle of a confrontation and pulled his lead Secret Service agent away from Chilean security officials who barred his bodyguards from entering an elegant dinner for 21 world leaders Saturday night.

Several Chilean and American agents got into a pushing and shoving match outside the cultural center where the dinner was held. Bush noticed the fracas after posing for pictures on a red carpet with the summit host, Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and his wife and first lady Laura Bush.

Pardon? Would you like to address me, or just talk behind my back. If you would like to ask me a question, you could put my name in the post you are making.

Thanks

Oh, well, some of your posts vanished while I was typing in the address box and I wondered if you got the picture. If you didn't, I can relate as I was in denial too, and for a long long time.

I saw this clip on TV last night and it was clear POTUS would not take no for an answer, and if it got any worse, was ready to rumble.

I just now saw the stills at Drudge.....something struck me.

Could this have been part of an attempt. I mean the Chilean security had to know who the Secret Service were....and it looks like an attempt to separate the President from his security.

This was no accident or mistake..

Apparently the Chilean security goons and the SS had a disagreement this afternoon about the security protocols for the dinner. The SS demanded that the President's personal detail accompany him through the entry, and the Chileans resisted. A Washington Times Secret Service source said "I knew this would happen" or some such thing.

Look, if the Chileans wanted to off the Prez they could have done it as he was walking up the red carpet. There were 50 of their security folks in the immediate area.

This was a turf battle between the Chilean security apparatus and the American security apparatus. I noticed from the video of the event that none of the other APEC attendees came in with their own security, so what part that played in the equation is yours to discern.

FWIW, I don't think it was any attempt at the President's life, because they had ample opportunity to do it if they wished before the altercation.

I wonder if this was just a simple misunderstanding?

Perhaps the Chilean guards didn't realize the folks they were trying to keep out were US Secret Service?

There is a good chance they really believed they were doing the right thing and protecting Bush.

I wouldn't want to be in their shoes when their President gets done with them later... (heh-heh)

What makes you think SS guys aren't carrying guns?

you're misreading something, because I never meant to suggest that the President's detail was noot armed. On the contrary, they will have both handguns and heavier fire power, something like Uzis, concealed on them.

I am, however suggesting that a very visible, fully equipped, Marine platoon with a full combat load out on display would have a sobering effect on any opportunists. No one would get in a shoving match with them without it starting a firefight.

sorry for any confusion.

My concern for the Secret Service agent was that he might be reprimanded by his superiors within the Secret Service. That was before I saw these photos. Photos of Secret Service agent vs. Chilean Security

The agent was separated from the President. Whether it was caused by a miscommunication or a deliberate diplomatic dance, it should not have happened.

The agent was singled out and then Chilean security were able to grab his arm, grab the agent's jacket lapel and knock him off balance. It should not have happened.

The Secret Service shadow the President, they are more than body guards or security detail. Their life is their job which is protecting the President. If it means that they put themselves in harm's way, i.e., throwing themselves into the line of fire, that's what they signed up for. Instead, the President was left alone for seconds, unguarded. That's all it would take.

The Secret Service have been doing the same job for over a hundred years and all other countries are aware of their job descriptions. It might have been awkward, but those Chilean security guards should have been disabled by our President's Secret Service detail. It sounds as if the Chilean security guards were looking for a fight - perhaps to embarrass President and Mrs. Bush.

It would only take a few Marines to overwhelm the forces of a third world shithole like Chile.
