Alamia, 63, an Islip Republican, declined to comment, referring to Warren G. Clark, a court spokesman.

You can bet yer bottom dollar if it was a Democrat it wouldn't mention his party affiliation, IF this was given the story in the first place.

As for Alamia, keep up the good work!

It happened in CI. I can see that happening. Doesn't really surprise me.

There are signs posted on the courtroom doors telling everyone to turn off electronic devices. The bailiff reminds everyone to turn that stuff off before the judge takes the bench.

When I've seen this happen, the bailiff usually confiscates the phone, and some courts will keep the phone overnight.

You're not even allowed to bring a phone into the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia.

Why? He said turn it off! I for one am sick of cell phones going off in places they shouldn't be and people using them in places they shouldn't be - she got what she deserved.

Just finished reading the article. Apparently this girl wanted to play in an adult world, yet expected the consequences of a teenager.

From the article:

Interesting that they point out the Judge was a Republican.

Well, she WAS warned. ROFLOLing too hard to care about the whining which will invariably follow. Perhaps she has not learned how to follow simple instructions.

This arrogant brat is facing drug possession charges and disobeying the order of the court. And the JUDGE should be thrown in jail?

Are you sure you're in the right place here?

"Are you sure you're in the right place here?"

that's funny... a jail sentence for a cell phone ringing is an abuse of power. the judge is clearly a jerk.

"the judge should be thrown in jail for being a jerk."

Why's HE a jerk?? SHE'S the one who refused to do as she ws told. She was already in court facing charges, and she's stupid enough to ignore the order of the jusge in her case? Tough bananas for her, maybe if she quit the drugs she'd have enough functional brain cells to know that when you're in a deep enough hole you stop digging.

the judge should be thrown in jail for being a jerk.

The arrogance of some of these tax paid government employees is beyond belief.

No wonder a lot of them run around armed and have guards on both sides of the bench, keeping their addresses as private as possible. They have good reason for this.

Any normal judge would have made a joke out of it, and made the young person feel like a fool instead of throwing them in a cage with convicted criminals.

This judge ought to have his ass kicked and put in jail with the same people he put there. Give him a taste of his own medicine.

After a night in the Suffolk County jail in Riverhead, Acevedo appeared Wednesday before Alamia and pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a misdemeanor, and was sentenced to 45 days in jail. The judge allowed the contempt charge to run concurrently.

Frankly, she got off too easy--it turned out to be a concurrent sentence. Perhaps when people realize there are consequences to actions they will to follow directions/rules/laws.

As far as cell phones being a nuisance and an intrusion you are right.

the judge should be thrown in jail for being a jerk.

Lets see, the first time it happened he warned them, and told them that if they didn't know how to turn off their phone to take it outside and to stomp it. That is about as clear a warning as one can receive. The jerk was the 17 y/o druggie that thought she was cutesy by not obeying the judge's order. Some actions have definate results, if she didn't learn it with the drugs, perhaps she learned it with her cell phone.

Exactly. I guess I'm just being minimalist today, but you've explained my position.
