ABC's "20/20" reports Missouri arena namesake cheated in college (Subscription required--see bugmenot.com)
Associated Press
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The 22-year-old Wal-Mart heiress who is the namesake of the new sports arena at the University of Missouri cheated her way through college, according to a report Friday on ABC's "20/20" program.

The newsmagazine cited Elizabeth Paige Laurie, who graduated from the University of Southern California, during a report on the prevalence of cheating in college.

The report was based on an interview with Laurie's freshman roommate, Elena Martinez, who said Laurie paid her about $20,000 over 3 1/2 years to write papers and complete other assignments.

[...]

"I learned a lot from her classes," she said.

[...]

What a deal...$20,000...free tickets...and an education... now she just needs the piece of paper.

I was JUST talking about this with a friend of mine who has gone to college 25 years after high school, and is appalled by her young classmates. She was amazed at the grade inflation, how most of the class expected an "A," and I was saying I liked it back when regardless of grades and classes you took, you had to prove your fitness to graduate via a defense. And then this shows up, and I see that the defense idea has been suggested already.

So...any chance of getting it back in?

It is quite rampant...and lots of teachers could care less.

I usually catch them by Googling some of the writing. Bingo!

I had a grad student (in Education no less) tell me that nobody ever told him he had to cite information from the Internet he used in his papers!
