I would assume that Michigan is realizing some economic benefit that justifies them receiving the trash they do. Why should others interfere--like stupid democratic posers? It seems to me this is an issue for the people of Michigan to deal with. We ship lots of our trash other places. Why should we ban trash here if there are those who benefit from the trade?

Let's not forgot the other side of this argument. At current landfill charges of anywhere from $25 to $50 per ton (sometimes even higher), the total volume of imported garbage to Michigan represents upwards of $100 million or more going into the state's economy.

The only thing that confuses me here is the economics. Canada is the second-large nation on earth with a population one tenth of the United States. How could it possibly be cheaper for them to ship their trash to Michigan than set aside just a few of their 3.9 million square miles for landfills?

Canada must have insane environmental regulations or something.

Democrats want President Bush to ask Canada to stop shipping trash to Michigan

Makes sense to me. Only country with more worthless space is Russia.

What is the cost/benefit to this? And shouldn't this be up to Michigan to decide?

WASHINGTON — The Associated Press today carried the statement of some Congressional Democrats as if it were a significant news story.

Democrats, who have been out of power since 1994, lost additional seats in both the House and the Senate in this year's elections.

The Associated Press, a consortium funded by the nation's newspapers, continues to treat Democrats as the majority party because none of its reporters know any Republicans, or care to find out what they say.

Readers are cautioned that stories by the Associated Press concerning activities in Congress may give the impression that certain measures have a snowball's chance in Hell, when in fact they are just Democrat press releases.

People who scream about the importation of trash from Canada to Michigan are missing the point. Michigan already exports lots of trash to Canada (for example, newly-manufactured General Motors parts, autos, and light trucks come to mind). It's only fair that Michigan take some trash back in return. :-)

Isn't that something for the governor of Michigan to take up?
