Democratic lawmakers want President Bush to ask Canada to stop shipping trash to Michigan when he meets with Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin later this month.
U-S Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow and Representative John Dingell have sent a letter today to Bush expressing their concern.
Dana Perino is a spokeswoman for the White House Council on Environmental Quality. She says the White House has received the letter and will consider it.
An average of 415 truckloads of trash enter Michigan from Canada each day. Democrats have been asking the E-P-A to enforce a 1992 treaty that requires Canada to notify the United States of shipments of trash.
Under the treaty, the United States can decline the shipments for environmental and other reasons.
Bingo...there has been a plan to use a mine up north for trash but oh what a fuss the enviro weenies kicked up and it got killed. The Michigan site is used because its cheaper than whatever alternatives Toronto has come up with so far.
Makes sense to me. Only country with more worthless space is Russia.
What is the cost/benefit to this? And shouldn't this be up to Michigan to decide?
Do leftists count as trash to be shipped to Canada?
I was going to say that. Trash for trash, sounds like an even exchange to me.
Maybe President Bush could make a deal with Canada. We'll keep on taking your trash if you'll take these three pathetic pieces of Michigan Trash in return. We'll give you back Michigan's canadian governor as part of the deal. She and Carolyn Parrish would make a perfectly matched set.
Exactly my thoughts! A quid pro quo of sorts!
WASHINGTON The Associated Press today carried the statement of some Congressional Democrats as if it were a significant news story. Democrats, who have been out of power since 1994, lost additional seats in both the House and the Senate in this year's elections. The Associated Press, a consortium funded by the nation's newspapers, continues to treat Democrats as the majority party because none of its reporters know any Republicans, or care to find out what they say. Readers are cautioned that stories by the Associated Press concerning activities in Congress may give the impression that certain measures have a snowball's chance in Hell, when in fact they are just Democrat press releases. |
You read my mind !
People who scream about the importation of trash from Canada to Michigan are missing the point. Michigan already exports lots of trash to Canada (for example, newly-manufactured General Motors parts, autos, and light trucks come to mind). It's only fair that Michigan take some trash back in return. :-)
Isn't that something for the governor of Michigan to take up?
