By a vote of its House of Delegates, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its list of disordered conditions in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the bible of the profession. The change came about not because of new research. Scientists had made no groundbreaking discoveries. No, the change because of a political coup engineered by homosexual activists, a process documented by pro-gay writer Ronald Bayer.18

Dr. Charles Socarides, a practicing psychiatrist who witnessed events at APA conventions, including threats of violence by homosexual activists, said, "The APA could only take the action it did by disregarding and dismissing hundreds of psychiatric and psychoanalytic research papers and reports that had been done on homosexuality over the previous two decades."19 In 1974, the American Psychological Association followed suit under similar conditions.

Meanwhile, under pressure from homosexual activists, states had already begun dropping laws against sodomy, thus paving the way for the free-wheeling, promiscuous "gay" scene that homosexual writer Randy Shilts chronicled as the prelude to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s.20

Shortly thereafter, the term "sexual preference" began to give way to "sexual orientation" in homosexual publications and then in the psychiatric and psychological literature. In fact, it began to turn up everywhere, from magazines to school policy proposals. A seemingly innocuous phrase to describe everybody's sexual roadmap, "sexual orientation" is much more than that. The preceding historical overview was intended to show that the term did not appear in a vacuum but was instead a key and deliberate step in an unfolding process of securing social, political and economic support for homosexuality.

No great lose. Homosexuality needs to be re-criminalized. About a hundred years ago, they tried to change it from a crime, to an illness to be treated, to which it went from that to a different lifestyle, to something that now is promoted as a positive on television networks.

Recriminalize it. Sodomy is still a crime thankfully in some places and under the common law. You recriminalize it, and you can start indicting people for promoting it before kids.

Only to defend a public high school student's freedom of speech: if the APA has declared homosexuality to be normal, it undercuts the claim that wearing a T-shirt with a pro-gay slogan is advocating perversion and is therefore disruptive. (I'm big on freedom of speech. Not 'freedom of speech' as in pornography, but freedom of speech as in political discourse. I'm the sort that defends free expression even when it's clearly in support of something that's wrong.)

But you're right, the story of the APA's action on homosexuality was much more about politics than science or medicine. Not a pretty episode in fact.

Actually madg use to push this APA BS as proof there was "new" research.

(i.e., Kinsey et al, 1948, 1953; Ford and Beach, 1951; Hooker, 1957; Marmor, 1965)

Problem is Kinsey has been discredited, Hooker has been debunked, Beach recanted his position and Marmor used it as a stepping stone to become the president of the APA.

The homosexual communtiy's well planned and well financed campaign to remove homosexuality from the DSM began with their infiltration of the American Psychiatric Association. It wasn't science, but rather pro-homosexual activism that was, and continues to be, the primary force behind policy changes and the politically correct statments made by the APA and the majority of the other "professional" medical organizations.

This was the homosexual community's biggest victory. It permitted them to claim that "homosexuality is normal" and set the stage to present this "normalcy" to the general public via a well planned media campaign ( outlined in 'The Overhauling of Straight America' ), and to kids in the public schools via Kevin Jennings' GLSEN. Kids as young as kindergarten age are now being indoctrinated with "homosexuality is normal."
