Comparing pornography to heroin, researchers on Thursday called on Congress to finance studies on "porn addiction" and launch a public health campaign about the dangers.
"We're so afraid to talk about sex in our society that we really give carte blanche to the people who are producing this kind of material," said James B. Weaver, a Virginia Tech professor who studies the impact of pornography.
Internet pornography is corrupting children and hooking adults into an addiction that threatens their jobs and families, a panel of anti-porn advocates told the hearing organized by Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., chairman of the Commerce subcommittee on science.
Brownback, a father of five, said when he was a boy, the typical kid's exposure was limited to occasional peeks at dirty magazines illicitly obtained by a buddy.

the founders would be appalled at the idea that something as pointless and vain as pornography could be defended on any reasonable grounds whatsoever. they would see plainly that it is a gratuitous and self-serving occupation, that purveyors of it are producing nothing of value and much of plainly useless, if not destructive potential; and I daresay the founders would be beside themselves that any adult would not recognize the destructive effects of pornography (as they would recognize the destructive effect of any useless preoccupation).
Public Service Announcement!!! Warning!!! Porn CAN become addictive. It can ruin your life and destroy your family. It is also immoral and exploitative.
See how easy that was? You DON'T have make a laundry list of evil habits to correctly warn against the dangers of one evil habit.
Women are inclined to watch pornography as well. My wife was an RA in college and other women on her floor posessed lots of porn. All the while casting scorn on men for viewing porn? Go figure.
As a broad rule of thumb, in this country and culture, this is definitely true.
This is irrelevant. As I made quite clear in post #35, I was not castigating a generality but was instead reporting what I have seen with my own eyes of the sorry fates of a few. certain. weak. individuals.
As I said to cyborg many posts ago in this thread: abusus non tollit usum
"Abuse does not do away with appropriate use"
The post to which #35 was a reply reported the dire results of "porn addiction" on a few individuals, but implied that this proved a rule that porn is universally harmful in this manner. My response was to demonstrate that a few individuals can be destroyed by ANYTHING, even something so generally salubrious as a personal devotion to God.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why so many here have so utterly misconstrued the sequence of thought and meaning.
At this point, I weary of attempting to repair their flawed understanding. I am not Syssiphus, and have rolled this boulder uphill as often as I intend to do.
Good night.
Ain't that the truth! I FR mailed Life and said I was very much in agreement but when I see one of these threads, it makes me not want to post my thoughts because of the ridicule when one doesn't agree with their mantra. I remember the interviews with Ted Bundy before his death because I'd read them years ago.
I don't like arguments and flame wars but I'm getting to the point where if someone wants to flame me, so be it. I can't let people I agree with get treated terribly and not say anything.
Sorry I didn't do it earlier, Life.
yours should be "never"
If sex is an addiction, I'm Kurt Cobain.
so I have discovered.
They would be appalled at what has been done with "regulating commerce among the several states".
Maybe so maybe no. Nevertheless, porn is the thing that is ruining the poster's friends life. Why bring up OTHER stuff? What if the friend was a drunk instead of a porn addict? Then we would say, "Alcohol can ruin your life." And that would be true too.
addiction to porn CAN ruin lives: true
certain methods of producing porn CAN ruin lives: true
(indeed - certain methods of producing porn are intrinsically anathema to healthy life... as is any other form of slavery).
on this we agree. OTOH...
I'd make a list of the things that CAN ruin lives, but:
1. I doubt it'd fit on the FR server, as infinity is, well, infinite
2. I doubt you are interested in realizing this particular point
3. I am done with this discussion
Good night.
some freepers are like breakwall.
they would have the sense to see the priorities aright, were they alive and functioning as founders or re - founders today, the era of borderless communication.
You're better looking than him.
The Capitol Hill parasites are paying back their $20 churchgoing true believer donors by holding inconsequential "hearings", posturing, riding their High Horses, just like their STUPID party sanctimonious supporters right here. Later on, the parasites will pass unrelated laws they never read to pay back their million dollar donors, laws written in their entirety by the donors' lobbyist staffs, laws that will affect the lives of us all. Another fine mess you got us into, Stanley!
It's all part of a vicious cycle. Women who view porn see men using women as waste receptacles and their hateful feminazi vision of men as knuckle-dragging cavemen scrawling pornographic graffiti on cave walls is reinforced.
Studies are showing that women react to porn much the same as do men: objectifying and dehumanising the opposite sex.
I know one person whose life it ruined.
They're probably still uncovering tons of porn hidden in the nooks of Camp David - after 8 years of Clinton.
