[snip]

Spellings became the subject of conservative sniping soon after moving to Washington after she was asked on C-SPAN to react to census data showing a decline in the traditional family. "So what?" she replied, noting that there were "lots of different types of family" and that she herself was "a single mom."

This is a pretty in-depth article. The above made me a little queasy. Thoughts?

I dunno. I don't really think it's all that important since I'm all for eliminating the Dept. of Education anyway.

She is very talented, was the main architect of the "No child left behind" bill. Has been with Bush for years and he is extremely high on her. Don't think there anything to feel queezy about

My kid was homeschooled, I never cared much about the Dept of Education. I never vote in local school board elections either.

Washington Post spins stuff...if the NEA protests, that will be a good sign that she's the right choice.

As I was told in an earlier thread, Dubya made no pretense of being conservative regarding the Federal role in education. This appointment, although disappointing, comes as no surprise.

I don't trust the source put her in context (much like our marine earlier this week). Don't worry about it. I trust W's judgement.

Well, wasn't Paige was doing a decent job? I figured the President would pick someone similar...

She did a lot of Texas education and defanged the Texas Education Union teachers.

Consider the source. They can't "mobilize the liberal base" to vote for Kerry anymore, so they'll try to "mobilize the conservative base" against Bush instead.

They know that's the only way they can win in 2008.

That's nice, but it does not change the fact that she loves Title IX. My alma mater no longer fields a baseball team, thanks to dear ol' Title IX.

You shouldn't opt out of voting in school board elections---you still pay property taxes.

My friend recently moved to Texas (Tyler Texas) from the Pacific NW (Vancouver, WA) She stated the schools in Texas are leaps ahead of the school system in the NW (Evergreen SD)

Looks like she has excellent qualifications and the trust of the President. Her record in Texas is promising. She shouldn't have any problems as long as she's never had lunch with Arlan Spectre.

That is to be preferred, yes. :-)

well, lets hope her husband whispers "school choice", "school choice", "school choice" as she sleeps at night. :)

The comments about the family that she made don't bother me at all. She was just stating the obvious. (that there are different kinds of families)

I do pay property taxes, but I'm going to pay property taxes whether the school board is good or bad.

And since my kid wasn't involved, I had no opinion on how local school board member's decisions influenced the policies or what policies were good or bad, so I opted out.
