DES MOINES, Iowa - President Bush (news - web sites) defeated Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) in Iowa by roughly 10,000 votes or less than 1 percent of the 1.5 million ballots cast, according to unofficial election results.
The results released Wednesday by Iowa Secretary of State Chet Culver showed Bush with 751,957 votes to 741,898 for Kerry, a margin of 10,059.
While narrow, the margin was more than double the 2000 edge in Iowa, where Democrat Al Gore (news - web sites) defeated Bush by 4,144 votes.
Voter turnout was traditionally high in Iowa with 72 percent of eligible voters showing up at the polls. There were 1,506,907 votes cast for president in the state, with 2,106,658 voters registered.
As elsewhere in the country, independent Ralph Nader (news - web sites) wasn't much of a factor in Iowa, drawing just 5,973 votes. The vote totals will remain unofficial until Nov. 29 when they are certified by the state's Executive Council, a panel of statewide elected officials.
The results mean Iowa's seven electoral votes go into the Republican column for the first time since 1984.

Meanwhile, Dan Rather says the Presidential race is "too close to call."
Kerry can still pull it out if he wins Ohio.
Has our great senator Harkin commented on this yet?
Late exit polls by Zogby show Kerry with a Hugh margin.......I'm Series...
Go back to DU and live in the utter delusional world that they have been living in for the last two weeks.
Sorry, guess I should have added (/sarcasm) for those to whom it wasn't OBVIOUS!
Ha, that is not going to happen.
"Kerry can still pull it out if he wins Ohio."
What in the world are you talking about?
Alright, people, lighten up. When I said "Kerry can still pull it out if he wins Ohio," I was making a humorous reference to the fact that people are still replaying the election. It was a JOKE!
Geez, is everybody still so touchy that they can't detect sarcasm without a big tag on the end of it? I thought we had gotten over it and could make jokes by now.
Mod, if people are offended, please pull my post and spare them any further anguish. Bush is in for another four years. I'm still kind of giddy over it and I thought it would be funny mock the Dems empty hopes.
I'll shut up now and let the flames commence.
I got it. Good post. I love dead pan humor.
Thanks. I really love the fact that Nader can't even be blamed for Kerry losing. It just makes the Bush win that much more powerful.
From either side.
Ohio is still too close to call.
No probem, my apology.
No problem. I think I needed a rant anyway, thanks for the excuse.
Forget Ohio! What ever happen with NM?? Have they declared the winner yet or are they waiting for the next Haley's comet to come around before they announce the winner?!!
I knew it was sarcasm and totally appreciated it.
Some FReepers take themselves SOOOO seriously!!! :)
