The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

"We should have secured the Mexican border."

That could be the pitiful lament we hear from negligent U.S. officials if Al Qaeda pulls off an attack on the United States using weapons of mass destruction smuggled across our southern frontier.

Were that horrendous event to happen, leaders in the administration and Congress would be justly hit with the same question that was perhaps unjustly cast at them and their predecessors after the unprecedented Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks: Why didn't they connect the dots?

Yup. IMO there are far too many on the take and sympathetic, or a part of, the jihad that reside in Pakistan; including many in the Pakistani military and special services. That's why (again IMO) we have not caught binny-boy and other major players. Also why I would not be surprised to wake up tomorrow and sadly hear that Musharaf (sp?) has been assassinated and a successful coup has transpired. But, I sincerely hope I never hear that.

"Bin Laden’s dirty bomb quest exposed"

From the Times Online, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NEW evidence of Osama Bin Laden’s attempts to acquire radioactive material for a “dirty bomb” has been revealed by an aide to the Al-Qaeda leader.

In a book to be published shortly, the insider shows that Bin Laden bowed to pressure from hawks within the terror group’s leadership to buy the material through supporters in Chechnya. He had initially been cautious about such a dramatic increase in its armoury.

It is the first time that such a senior Al-Qaeda figure has revealed the internal tensions and debates within the group, and shows it was far less unified than had been thought."

Interesting. These guys want Musharraf out, in a major way. (Article was posted earlier, I believe, but worth the read).

http://www.dawn.com/2004/12/20/nat1.htm

But now China steps up to the plate, so to speak, and wants Musharraf to stay on as President (for the safety of their investments, of course).

China to 'double' investment
By Staff Reporter

LAHORE, Dec 19: China's private and public sectors would double their investment in Pakistan during the next couple of years, according to a federal minister.

Federal Science and Technology Minister Naurez Shakoor, who accompanied the prime minister during his visit to China, told reporters here on Sunday.

He said the government would set up industrial parks where the Chinese investors would be free to make investment and get a number of concessions. This, he said, was like a breakthrough.

The minister said the two countries would also exchange delegations of scientific experts and students. The minister, who is also provincial president of the PPP-Patriots, said President Musharraf would stay in uniform in the larger interest of the country. Musharraf's dual role, he said, would give the country stability.

It had something to do with where we store our nuke weapons.

HipShot would be the one to ask if that is a doable attack target. I'm thinking probably NOT..... given the levels of 24/7 security and authority to shoot without warning beyond posted signs. I know that it's been done on nuke bases overseas in the 1980's. It usually only takes one protester completely riddled by a belt fed M60 machinegun to calm the crowd down. In the post 911 era, I think that trigger fingers would be much more nervous and....itchy.

OSAMA'S PLAN B
By PETER BROOKES

December 20, 2004 -- WHATEVER you do, don't dismiss Osama bin Laden's newest audio message. Sure, it's just the latest of 17 cameos by the terrorist thug since 9/11. But it may be his scariest yet.

Why? Because Osama's latest appearance shows he's changing tactics, and he's onto something that just might work this time.

Interesting read. Thanks for posting it.

It seems we noted here at TM the change in OBL's appearance in the last video message - the clerical robes, no visible weaponry, etc. It made me think he was changing his tack to appeal to Muslims as more of a religious reformer than a warrior. Just some thoughts...

Security Concerns In Indonesia
2:27 pm PST, 20 December 2004

Fresh security concerns have swept the Indonesian capital of Jakarta after a hand grenade was found hidden in a tin can beside the Hilton Hotel today.

The discovery came just days after Australia warned of a possible terror attack on the hotel complex.

The grenade, which was taken away by bomb squad officers, was found by a cleaner as he swept around the heavily-guarded hotel grounds.

A hotel spokesperson says the grenade was inside a tin alongside the hotel fence.

It was taken away by bomb squad officers.

"NEW evidence of Osama Bin Laden’s attempts to acquire radioactive material for a “dirty bomb” has been revealed by an aide to the Al-Qaeda leader.

I am NOT at all worried about the so called dirty bomb scenario, with nuclear material wrapped around a conventional high explosive. The threat there is mostly psychological. Unless you're standing next to or very near the device and then it's the actual explosion. But the true nightmare (and I'm sure everyone will agree) is the detonation of an actual nuclear weapon, maybe a thermonuclear weapon on US soil. I've seen recent reports that suggest that 2005 may be the year for such an event.

Terror attack on LNG vessel could produce injury, damage a mile away

WASHINGTON (AP) — A terror attack on a tanker delivering liquefied natural gas at a U.S. port could set off a fire so hot it would burn skin and damage buildings nearly a mile away, government scientists say in a report expected to influence where new multibillion-dollar terminals will be built.

The report from a government nuclear weapons lab, a 160-page unclassified version of which was obtained Monday by The Associated Press, characterizes an LNG tanker spill from a terror attack as a low probability. If successful, however, it would become “a high consequence event” that could produce massive injuries and property damage, the report said.

The yearlong study by scientists at Sandia National Laboratory, a premier federal research facility, provides the most detailed analysis to date of the potential public safety impact of a terrorist attack on an LNG transport tanker.

I've always wondered sis, would terrorists attack any state in the throes of winter weather?

Well, my TM sis, the jihadis will strike whenever they are ready to do so, and if it happened when people were semi-isolated for some reason (weather among them), wouldn't it appear to be even more incentive to add to their evil pleasure?

Am trying to picture jihadis on skis or out of their element. Instead of Guantanamo, AQ prisoners should be kept in Alaska at a frigid outpost IMHO as part of their "conditioning." Too many terrorists being bred and trained in South America and Mexico in climates much like their home climates. No harm done in separating them from their clone counterparts.

The author of the article is 'Jim Robbins' (not Robinson)LOL.

Nothing more yet. Some denials of the capture, but 2 names have not yet been released.

I guess we keep fingers crossed and wait.
