The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Connect these dots, now
Full Story
"We should have secured the Mexican border."

That could be the pitiful lament we hear from negligent U.S. officials if Al Qaeda pulls off an attack on the United States using weapons of mass destruction smuggled across our southern frontier.

Were that horrendous event to happen, leaders in the administration and Congress would be justly hit with the same question that was perhaps unjustly cast at them and their predecessors after the unprecedented Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks: Why didn't they connect the dots?

It wasn't the obvious things that could happen to a healthy 29-year-old," his mother, Karen Grablowsky, told JTA on Tuesday.

Thanks for bringing this story and links to us all4one! It's certainly one that requires a second look when more info is gathered.

...the head of Al-Islah movement issued a statement today confirming the date of the upcoming demonstrations for December 16th.

Most assuredly there will be violence at this conference, judging from the armed attendees to the 7,000 anti-riot soldiers called in from Jordan (some to guard the Royal palaces). If ever it appeared there was an opportunity to attempt takeover of the Saudi government, this would be as good as any.... Al-Islah supporters referring to it as a "revolution" might be another clue..

If they were to succeed in toppling the Saudi regime, the repercussions would be enormous.

But when the pilot returned to make three low-altitude passes and appeared to be taking pictures, it raised a red flag. Now police want to know who the mysterious pilot is and what he plans to do with his pictures.

The airspace over the water plant isn't restricted – it's perfectly legal to fly overhead. But the ultra-light pilot's actions were unusual enough to warrant concern.

"Second time over you wonder what he was doing, the third pass was the thing that tripped our minds to say, what's he really doing?" said plant operator William Kakritz.

"This is a first. It's pretty unusual," said Charlotte sheriff Bill Cameron.

Cameron ordered deputies to search nearby airfields for any sign of the small plane. But tracking ultra-lights is nearly impossible.

FBI investigates mysterious death
http://www.jta.org/page_view_story.asp?intarticleid=14819&intcategoryid=3
WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 (JTA)— The FBI is investigating the mysterious death of a young American Jewish terrorism expert who worked at a think tank where research into Islamic extremism has drawn death threats, family and friends said.
Jason Korsower, 29, died in his sleep at his father’s Atlanta home on Friday, Nov. 26, after Thanksgiving celebrations with his family.

Officials at the Investigative Project, where Korsower worked, also would not comment.

The Investigative Project is run by Steve Emerson, whose predictions of a major Islamist attack in the 1990s enhanced his credibility as a terrorism expert after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

It ratcheted up death threats against him and his organization — and drove his organization semi-underground.

Cameron ordered deputies to search nearby airfields for any sign of the small plane. But tracking ultra-lights is nearly impossible.

Certainly that point is well taken and researched by the evil-doers prior to the flight(s). Question is, what are we doing to to counter that threat, or do we plan to just let them keep surveiling and possibly contaminating wherever they can fly those ultra-lights? Next question, how many more of those flights have been totally undetected?

Iraqi ultralight flights raise fears of chemical, suicide attacks
By Sean D. Naylor | Army Times

CENTRAL IRAQ - At least two Iraqi ultralight aircraft have flown over U.S. Army positions here, raising fears that Iraq may use the single-pilot planes to drop chemical or biological weapons or launch suicide attacks.

The small, prop-driven planes evaded a tight air defense system before flying over an assembly area packed with helicopters, tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles and other military equipment. They flew off before anti-aircraft crews received permission to shoot them down.

The first ultralight was spotted about 3 p.m. local time (7 a.m. ET) Friday.

``My driver noticed an aircraft off to the east unlike any he'd ever seen before,'' said Staff Sgt. Billy Armstrong, who leads a squad of Linebackers - Bradley fighting vehicles mounted with Stinger anti-aircraft missiles.

Through his binoculars, Armstrong saw a tiny plane with a wingspan between 15 and 20 feet being steered by a pilot sitting under the wings with a small engine behind him.

The grayish-black ultralight was about two miles away and 900 feet above the ground, flying in a straight line ``as slow as a helicopter would,'' Armstrong said

Another ultralight was reported over a different part of the assembly area.

One of the things ultralight pilots like best about their sport is the federal licensing requirement. There isn't any.

Pilots need no license at all and the planes don't need to be registered or inspected, but they do have to be tiny. A single-seater can weigh no more than 254 pounds, not including pilot, fuel and emergency equipment. It can carry only five gallons of fuel and be able to fly no more than 63 mph.
