Washington State Governor's Race--Certification (Live Thread)(Rossi (R) wins by 261 votes!)
Washington State Secretary of State ^ | 11/17/2004 | The Conservator

Posted on 11/17/2004 4:44:42 PM PST by TheConservator

This is a LIVE THREAD for discussion of the impending certification of final results in the Washington State Governor's race, between Dino Rossi (R) and Christine Gregoire (D).

The Secretary of State is required to certify the final results this evening. As of 4:28 P.M. PST, Gregoire leads by 29 votes with 2521 votes from 4 or 5 counties left to be reported. King County (the Dem's stronghold) has apparently made its final report.

Washington State law requires a machine recount if the certified results show a difference of less than 2000, which now seems almost certain. It also requires a manual recount if the difference is less than 150 votes. A machine recount is estimated to take a week, a hand recount a month or more.

If the final result were a tie, the winner would be decided by lot.

It was almost like this with the Gorton/Cantwell fiasco.

Can you imagaine if WA were the swing state for the presidential election? What an embarassing mess.

It's a statewide race, not a national race, so dealines are not important. Not even in the same ballpark as Florida 2000.

yes, we wouldn't want anyone to be disenfranchised, would we? (except maybe the military vote). I've wondered how many people had even heard or used the word 'disenfranchised' before the 2000 election (my guess, not that many that have used it since the 2000 election night).

I was living in Miami for the 2000 recount. This is like Groundhog Day for me.

if only 250 out in benton & current % holds

rossi by 95 votes

on 250 votes rossi must get 52.8% of vote to win by 1 vote

that would require a 15% drop in rossi current % total

if 750 votes outstanding

rossi by 272 votes

Is there a time deadline? Is it possible the "count every vote" people will say "Sorry! You didn't get it in by 6:00 p.m.!"

just tuned in...What is happening? Can someone post a quick summary? If the republican wins by 250+, is it over? Or will their be a recount regardless?

Why in the heck is it taking Benton Co. so long to count a few hundred ballots?!? The elections supervisor should be fired. Election day was more than 2 weeks ago. This is not a huge county. Really pathetic.
