Dutch: Sex Education Question

Posted on 11/17/2004 1:46:49 PM PST by blakep

If we are having problems with sexual education here in America, shouldn't we try to implement a system that the Dutch have in place? I don't know the positives/negatives of the system because I can't get any details on the web, can some of you help me out?

I hear they have an average of 8 pregnancies per 1,000. Plus their abortion rate is the lowest in the world.

Preaching abstinence was never the solution.,.. A good sex ed course is!

How does one go about teaching a good sex ed course given high school dropout rates? What about those who manage to graduate but only due to social promotion or, those who receive passing grades but only due to the low standards?

No, most Americans are against learning how to "do it" with farm animals....

The Dutch are contracepting, euthanizing, aborting, and sodomizing themselves out of existence. In 100 years there won't be a teenage pregnancy problem at all among the Dutch, because there will be no Dutch.

"I'm asking you guys for empirical data..."

I think you might get more serious answers if you cited a source for the statement you are making that the Dutch "have an average of 8 pregnancies per 1,000. Plus their abortion rate is the lowest in the world." It's an interesting assertion, and those are interesting numbers, but without a source, I dont know how credible they are. A great industrial scientist once said, "without data it's just another opinion."

The pregnancy rate in the US should definitely be addressed, but to say that Americans should be ashamed of their teenage pregnancy rate when comparing it to Holland and other such countries is ridiculous. The difference in demographics alone makes the comparison apples to oranges, let alone the differences in levels of immigration, both legal and illegal.

Today in the WSJ you had the answer... You start sex ed in Middle school... This is one of the reason of the fall of teen pregnancies...

From http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=10710702&dopt=Abstract

"The level of adolescent pregnancy varies by a factor of almost 10 across the developed countries, from a very low rate in the Netherlands (12 pregnancies per 1,000 adolescents per year) to an extremely high rate in the Russian Federation (more than 100 per 1,000). Japan and most western European countries have very low or low pregnancy rates (under 40 per 1,000); moderate rates (40-69 per 1,000) occur in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and a number of European countries. A group of five countries--Belarus, Bulgaria, Romania, the Russian Federation and the United States--have pregnancy rates of 70 or more per 1,000. The adolescent birthrate has declined in the majority of industrialized countries over the past 25 years, and in some cases has been more than halved. Similarly, pregnancy rates in 12 of the 18 countries with accurate abortion reporting showed declines. Decreases in the adolescent abortion rate, however, were less prevalent..."
