MSNBC: Santorum Stabs Us In The Back...AGAIN! Rick "Rounding Up" Judiciary Chair Votes For Specter!
GrassrootsPA ^ | 11/17/04 | GrassrootsPA

Posted on 11/17/2004 10:45:21 AM PST by GeneralHavoc

First he single-handedly cost Toomey the race, and now this!

If this report is correct, Rick Santorum has a LOT of explaining to do...

MSNBC:

Although a staunch foe of abortion and same-sex marriage, Santorum helped Specter win re-election this year and according to Specter, has been rounding up support for him as Judiciary chairman.

"Sen. Santorum has been enormously helpful," said Specter Tuesday. "He's gone above and beyond the call of duty. My number one priority in the next two years is to reelect Sen. Santorum."

For conservative voters who may dominate in the 2008 GOP primaries, one doubts that this would really be an appealing campaign slogan: "Rick Santorum: The man who brought you Arlen Specter."

And once again, Santorum figures incorrectly.

Thanks for your great analysis. You made so much sense.. :-/.

Let's all just kill ourselves then. Specter is going to squash all of Bush's judges.. Bush and Santorum are letting him get away with it.. Let's go head for the bridge and just jump off.

You people.

Right. And remember that we need all the RINOs to vote for cloture to get Bush's legislative agenda enacted on tort reform, social security privatization, tax reform, and much, much more.

One sullen RINO will take others with him, and we need 60 votes to get anything accomplished in the Senate.

We are on the threshold of some amazing legislation enacted in Bush II.

Specter must have something on Santorum. Wonder what it could be.

I think Larry Craig turned on us too.

This is just a thought? Could have the other moderate (liberal Rino's )senators have made some kind of threat if Specter was denied?

There is enough of them.

"I think you and Josh are on to something -- Santorum will not sell conservatives out. You can bet he has extracted a pretty hefty price from Specter in order to become Chairman. I know Inhofe stated that if Specter crosses the line, the votes are there to oust him, and he will lead the charge."

May I ask where Inhofe made that statement? Thanks.

>And once again, Santorum figures incorrectly.<

Well said. Santorum should have gone to the mat on this one.He can afford to take down Specter. We conservatives need another scalp.Santorum has two more years before he has to run again and PA.is a solid "red State".I am sure their is a long list of votes we can point to in order to brand him a RINO.Maybe we can run a "true conservative" against him in the primary next time.Anyone with an (R) after his name can win in PA.

One of the facts of life. Politics is the art of the possible. Santorum has not betrayed anybody. He knows what he needs to do to accomplish the best possible outcome for the election of conservative judges. Specter has been irretrievably outed and the onus is on him to support Pres Bush. If he slips up, he will be out of the chairmanship as quickly as he got in.

You said it pal, not I. I've got far better things to do with my time and my life.

Santorum was WRONG that Bush needed Arlen to win PA. And he's wrong again this time.

I am NOT going to continue to vote for people who would thwart years of hardwork by myself and other conservatives and who continue to ignore our voices. It's that simple.

Hatch was just dumb and naive and maleable.

Specter is downright malevolent.

Oh, I certainly agree that Specter's socially liberal views are the issue, and I have sent my concerns via E-mail as have many others.

Specter weathered these assaults before, and unfortunately will again, in my view.

But, the redeeming thoughts on this are that he has been officially put on notice.

All that is required, is that nominees pass through the committee to the floor of the Senate.

If a appointment is made for a judge like Keyes, for example, I would not expect that Specter or many others would support the nomination, but I do expect he will support, albeit luke warmly, a nominee who has supported in writing a right to life issue as long as the man or woman is not an activist.

Frankly, I do not support activists of any persuasion on any court, and I suspect this is what Specter alluded to in his comments. Specter was positioning himself as a mediator.

Specter shot himself in the foot with those comments. He also has a poor history of understanding strict construction view points. He is one of those who believe the Constitution is a living document. But as a mediator, he may be of some value, and I believe this is what the Senate believes to be true.

I would much prefer he was not heading the committee. But Senate rules have put him in that post. The Senate will likely follow it's rules and not bow to pressure. I don't want a Senate that bows to pressure either.

It is a catch 22 and a half!

"...if I were Rick Santorum, I wouldn't really be counting on Arlen's support..."

I really expect Specter to stab him in the back, but on the other hand, that might help Rick in his next election more than if he didn't.

You may be correct that Specter cares more about being chairman than he does about shaping the judiciary, but once he's installed and has the power, he will revert to his old form as always.

For everybody on here who thinks that Specter will be removed if he doesn't behave and keep whatever promises he's made, I have BIG BIG news for you ---- we are going to be saddled with Arlen and his actions until he retires or dies. The Republicans have already indicated they are not willing to fight one another or the Democrats.

The senate sure bows to "pressure" when it comes from the left, though don't they? God forbid the Senate EVER listen to those on the right.

"I find it hard to trust a man who would so quickly stab the back of one of his allies"

I look at it this way as well.... The President and Santorum stepped in and saved his Senate seat - then he almost *immediately* stabs President Bush in the back by making these horrible statements - but we should believe that after they step in AGAIN to save the Chairmanship seat - he will all of a sudden champion our cause and help get good judges approved???

Color me very skeptical.....

Look everybody calm down! You know that Santorum is a stand up guy. I'm pissed that Arlen is going to be the chairman but politics is the art of the possible. Live to fight another day and don't undermine a good man like Santorum. I think he's only doing what he has to do.
