Specter gets key backing for Judiciary post Current chairman supports him to head panel, but Majority Leader Bill Frist says, 'We'll see.' By Jeff Miller Call Washington Bureau WASHINGTON | Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter picked up an important endorsement Tuesday in his bid to chair the Judiciary Committee, even as social conservatives vowed to step up their fight to block him. Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the current chairman, said he supported Specter and predicted other committee Republicans would do the same. ''I think this matter will resolve itself,'' said Hatch, who will be forced to step down in January because of GOP term limits on chairmen. But Majority Leader Bill Frist was less enthusiastic when asked about Specter's chances. The Tennessee senator told CNN, ''We'll see.'' ...

Hatch said no one in Tuesday's meeting opposed Specter, whom he called ''highly respected.'' ''I believe he'll be a great chairman,'' Hatch said. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., a Judiciary member, said Tuesday that he was leaning toward supporting Specter...

When Specter was asked if he would continue to be independent-minded as chairman, he answered ''yes.'' But he declined to elaborate.

Maybe we should bookmark our prediction.

Okay.

1.) Specter gets the chairmanship.
2.) Specter brings his ugly pro-abortionist face to the committee.
3.) Specter supports the presidents nominees.

Bush does NOT play; Spectre has already crossed him once; they made a deal and Spectre didn't stick to it.

You can bet Bush and Rove are POSITIVE that Spectre has been neutered or he won't get this seat.

This is a position that is made for Mrs. Dole she is likable and outgoing and will put a face on the GOP. I think Rino is an unfair term, she is a loyal Republican, she will never be the conservative Sen Helms was but she never indicated she would be. She does have a little bit of a big government nanny state side to her but it is in a conservative way. Coleman is somewhat younger than Mrs. Dole and he will have other chances, I an not sure how long Mrs Dole intends to stay in the Senate she is popular enough to win the seat as long as she wants but I get the feeling that although she will probably run for a second term, assuming Bob's health remains good, she will only be a two termer.

This is SO typical of how the RepublicRats fool their base by saying "the alternative is worse so elect us"

Wouldn't it be great to be able to vote for a candidate you actually agreed with, rather than to be forced to vote for the "lesser of two evils"? Is that America gone forever?

I don't see Hatch taking the fight to Kennedy and Schumer.

He doesn't like to get down and dirty. The republicans haven't learned yet.

Now that the election is over, just sit back and enjoy the show. These career douchebags have no idea what is in store for them. It's about time these government lifers feel the pressure. W is Jack Welsh, Sandy Weill, Jamie Dimon and George Steinbrenner all wrapped up in one. Welcome to the real world Washington!!!

Agreed. Specter is already marginalized and he will be an effective foil for Bush.

We're gonna start by getting the backlog of circuit court nominees confirmed.

Those who want Snarlin' Arlen's head will not relent, no one will be seated until the Senate reconvenes in January, and the GOP caucus doesn't want to deal with this mess that Specter created between now and then.

Specter will not be Judiciary Chair.

If Specter was trying to fool pro-lifers, he would have kept his big mouth shut until after he was selected chairman.

No?

Of course Specter will be the Judiciary chair, and to the surprise of many freepers, he will do a good job getting Bush's appointees confirmed.

Orrin Hatch, the current chairman, said he supported Specter and predicted other committee Republicans would do the same.

Just because Hatch is happy with his ball-ectomy and estrogen regimen doesn't mean other members of the GOP will follow suit.

Put the bong DOWN.

Specter is a Democratic troll.

Suit yourself. My belief is that Specter is totally under control, has been fully compromised, and will get the job done.

Strategery.

"Strategery."

It's either that or political mayhem.

Should Specter frag out on this so-called "compromise," there will be political hell to pay.

This is why I NEVER donate to the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee. They called me before the election and I told them no because, "I don't want any of my money going to people like Arlen Specter."

Sorry, guys.
