Rumsfeld, Hostettler Warn US Borders at Risk toTerrorism
CNN.com/Lou Dobbs Tonight ^ | Nov. 16, 2004 | Lou Dobbs

Posted on 11/16/2004 10:40:03 PM PST by AuntB

DOBBS: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is warning of the threat of terrorists entering this country through the same routes as those used by illegal aliens. Secretary Rumsfeld, traveling in South America, warned that enemies look for weaknesses and take advantage of them.

DONALD RUMSFELD: The risk is that some of these human-smuggling routes into our country from this hemisphere could be used just as easily for terrorists. ~snip~

REP. JOHN HOSTETTLER (R-IN), CHAIRMAN, SUBCOMMITTEE ON IMMIGRATION AND BORDER SECURITY: : Well, the House will not be taking up in a positive sense guest worker legislation. We know that this is a priority for some in Washington. It is not a priority for the House of Representatives. In fact, those of us in the House that deal closely with the immigration issue believe that we need to go the other way. And that is look at the issue of enforcement and strong enforcement of our immigration laws in order to keep not only more millions of illegal aliens out, but to do something about the 10 plus million that are here now.

HOSTETTLER: Oh, well, this is something that we have been concerned about for years. It is an issue that, as we look at the number of individuals crossing the southern border, referred to as OTMs, or other than Mexicans, that number is rising drastically, because others in the world realize that our southern border is porous. Our men and women in uniform and the Border Patrol are doing everything they can and then some to enforce and strengthen the border. There are just not enough of them. And this is something that there may be some disconnect within the administration..~snip~

Makes me wonder if Rummy might back Tancredo in '08? States have the authority to protect their borders.....

Article I, Section 10,
Clause 3: No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any Duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay.

1) Actually Invaded - check!

2) Imminent Danger of foreign takeover, will not admit of delay - check!

Two good reasons for the People to raise a Militia, and engage in war against imminent danger, from border invaders.

Either is sufficent in itself.

WoW, Donald! Do you think you could tell George that...Oh and mention drugs coming that way too. Yeah, that's right. It might help Washington to put it all together. We already know that, but thanks for keeping us in mind.

The leisure rich will have to mow their own lawns.

This is the thing about this issue that has bothered me the most. Those running the government make it sound as if all the illegals are here picking fruit and mowing lawns instead of taking jobs from legal Americans andd swelling the welfare rolls. Considering how many are coming in, all I can say is that this country must have an awful lot more fruit that I ever thought.

I'm hoping that the shake up of having Condi Rice in as Secretary of State, and a cleaning out of the CIA is an indication of things to come. I get that feeling that Condi is no one to tangle with. Perhaps some fur will fly, and the government might start thinking that the people have had about a gutful?

In regard to fencing the border, let's put 33,000 volts on it, and I'm not talking horse shock fences, let's put utility hot to it! Sound cruel? Better to kill a 100,000 illegals with my hot fence, than say having a nuke go off in hometown? Hey America, let's choose wisely. I'll even do the electrical hook-up for the fence!

"They know an attack is imminent, they are covering their behinds."

I am not sure sure about this comment, many of these people are older and have served for 20-30 years in the government. People do retire and wish to enjoy their last few remaining years alive in relative peace. To me, the enemy can pick and choose their targets and most likely could have used a dirty bomb or some other method to hurt us badly. Their are so many soft targets because we are a free country you can't possibly protect them all. That being said, it really is impossible to know exactly when the enemy will strike.

Yoo Hoo! Don? They're already here. Been here for years.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Why now Don? If you're so worried about the terrorists crossing our southern borders then where the heck were you for the past four years. Kind of late to be jumping on the band wagon don't you think?! Your help while critically late might help to draw attention to this critically important problem. Now, what do you propose to do about it?!

That only sounded radical to the neoconservatives and rhinos.

I'm sure that it still does. Those two segments of the Republican party have made this grave immigration problem worse by a factor of what, at least 10?! Gotta give credit where credit is due.

How come EVERYBODY knows, but President Bush?

He does know. He just doesn't care what the PEOPLE think or want. But you can bet that he cares what his multi-nationalist no-borders business partners want!

He also said that handwritten letters are taken more seriously than anything (thanks to "cut" and "paste" processing programs). But I think that's a bit of a stretch in this day and age.

He is right and it isn't a stretch these days. Actually its more true today than it was back then. E-mail gets intercepted by filters in these guys offices and they are rarely opened and actually read. Content and subject matters are scanned by a program and then they get sorted by 'general' subject matter and then you get a warm fuzzy and friendly form 'spam type' letter that usually doesn't even much resemble a response to your original subject or inquiry.

The actual snail mail letter must be opened and read or at least quickly scanned and then sorted. These people know that e-mails can be mass generated by one person with the right kind of software and be made to look like many people sent them. Hand written or typed letters carry much MUCH greater weight but require that someone actually do a little bit of work, to get up from their cozy key boards to go outside and place a stamp on a real envelope and place it in the mail.

In years past I've worked this side of the issues and efforts down in the trenches (in campaigns) and have spoken with (state and federal) congressional aides on this very subject several times. When you work at this level it gives one some insight into the process. Don't get me wrong, emails have a place but real letters carry much greater effective weight in the offices than any email could ever hope for.

I agree. On most of the reps websites, you can find a fax and mailing address. www.senate.gov, www.house.gov

I haven’t checked this out yet, but it may be worth it. I’ve caught this program on late night radio several times, The Mark Edwards Show - Wake up America on KDWN, Las Vegas. Jim Gilcrest with a website, www.minutemanproject.com is organizing people to go to the So. border in April. They plan on shining spot lights and having cameras to document the nightly crossings. They don’t sound like racist whacko’s and they insist on no violence, firearms, etc., but we need to check them out further.
