OMAHA A 23-year-old Omaha Marine died while fighting in Iraq, the same day he became a father, family members said Tuesday.
Shane Kielion's son was born at about 10 a.m. Monday and Kielion died just hours later, said his aunt Karma Matthews.
Matthews said Kielion never found out he had become a dad.
Kielion, who was on his second tour in Iraq, graduated from Omaha South High School in 1999 and married his high school sweetheart, April, the mother of his new baby.
His former teachers and coaches said he was the quarterback of the football team and a role model.
Football coach Jay Ball said when Kielion came to visit in August, he bragged about his soon-to-be family.
"He was excited about his baby on the way and he always told me how beautiful his wife was," Ball told KM3 News in Omaha.
Ball said Kielion's memory will still be there to inspire his new son.
The family was not immediately giving interviews about Kielion's death.
Tearful prayers for this family.
Dear God in Heaven! Bless this man and his family. My deepest condolences to this man's family, especially his son as he grows up without his dad.
Wow. I don't care what I have to do, I don't want to let ANY anti-war loonies do to these brave men and women's reputations what they did to it in the 60's.
Prayers for the family and may his son draw inspiration throughout his life from his hero dad.
So SAD!!
God please bless this family ten-fold!
All my prayers for this brave man's family! Semper Fi!
I'm so sorry for this young mans family. Please accept my condolences.
I'm sure that Kevin Sites reporting has made our brave marines safer.
God Bless this fallen marine who died for a Country where only 31 states are worthy of his sacrifice.
:-(
My prayers go up for this young hero. Lord, please provide his family with comfort and peace. Surround them with your love. Keep his memory alive for the new baby. In Jesus' precious name. Amen

If you want on/off my prayer ping list, please let me know. All requests happily honored.
God Bless this Marine's soul, and I will say a prayer for his son tonite.
Please God, let there be some meaning to this. Amen
As a FReeper from a Kerry state, I implore you not to take the Red/Blue stuff too seriously. Throw out Multonomah Country (Portland, OR), and Oregon is an easy Bush win. Blue CITY is more like it.
Prayers and condolences for this awesome Marine.
Our future and the future of this man's baby depends upon such acts of valor and courage.
My heart breaks for a young woman, celebrating one of life's most wonderful blessings in the birth of her son and also losing her beloved husband on the same day. May God bless April and her new son and give them strength and comfort for the days ahead. And may they always know that America honors their sacrifice for a noble cause!
Oh, damn. Just damn. Not a single good thing to be said about this.
May this Marine rest in peace and may his family be covered with the Lord's love.
