NBC Says Marine Shot Dead Wounded Iraqi Prisoner

LONDON (Reuters) - A television pool report by U.S. network NBC said on Monday that a U.S. Marine had shot dead an unarmed and wounded Iraqi prisoner in a mosque in Falluja.

The Iraqi was one of five wounded prisoners left in the mosque after Marines had fought their way in on Friday and Saturday. There was no immediate comment from the Pentagon (news - web sites) on the report.

U.S. forces launched an offensive one week ago on Falluja, and have gained overall control of the formerly rebel-held city, although scattered resistance remains.

The pool report by NBC correspondent Kevin Sites said the mosque had been used by insurgents to attack U.S. forces, who stormed it and an adjacent building, killing 10 militants and wounding the five.

Sites said the wounded had been left in the mosque for others to pick up and move to the rear for treatment. No reason was given why that had not happened.

A second group of Marines entered the mosque on Saturday after reports it had been reoccupied. Footage from the embedded television crew showed the five still in the mosque, although several appeared to be already close to death, Sites said.

He said one Marine noticed one of the prisoners was still breathing.

A Marine can be heard saying on the pool footage provided to Reuters Television: "He's fucking faking he's dead. He faking he's fucking dead."

"The Marine then raises his rifle and fires into the man's head. The pictures are too graphic for us to broadcast," Sites said. No images of the shooting were shown in the footage provided to Reuters.

The report said the Marine, who had returned to duty after being shot in the face a day earlier, had been removed from the field and was being questioned by the U.S. military.

Sites said the shot prisoner "did not appear to be armed or threatening in any way."

Obviously, not allowed. . .however, if you are, say, engaged in street-to-street, house-to-house fighting and duck inside a church for cover, that is not wrong.

Happened many more times in modern warfare and thus rules were developed to prohibit that activity/deception.

IOW, are you worthy of being *allowed* to surrender? Surrender is a *benefit* usually (traditionally) bestowed to those behaving in a lawful manner.

Short answer: yes. Same thing as some slug murderer surrendering to the police and coming out with their hands up. And in this case I am sure the bad guy will be treated most humanly by the Iraqi authorities. . .OUCH!

This is not a Queensbury Rules match, and I am gratified to hear we are not trying to play by them, for the most part.

These guys would slowly saw the head off of any US Marine who might have the misfortune of being captured alive.

These are not "Freedom Fighters". These are not people who have the best interest of Iraq in mind. These are people who are trying to get us to leave, and if they succeed, you can bet they are going to slaughter any Iraqi who tried to help coalition forces.

Do I hate feeling this way? Yes. I hate war, and I hate this war. My heart goes out to all those young men, who no doubt, would do nearly anything to be anywhere else, if they could do it without dishonoring them or their buddies. But this is the right place for them to be.

About a block away, a Marine was killed and five others wounded by a booby-trapped body they found in a house after a shootout with insurgents.

If that is the case, then that sums it all up for me. You booytrap the dead and wounded, and we're not going to be doctors or morticians anymore. Seems to me the Marine was more than justified.

These are not "Freedom Fighters". These are not people who have the best interest of Iraq in mind. These are people who are trying to get us to leave, and if they succeed, you can bet they are going to slaughter any Iraqi who tried to help coalition forces.

That is something far too many forget. It would be nice if we could be nice guys in these types of situations, but the enemy is not going to be nice. Your talking about people who would drive a car into a crowd and blow it up, killing and maiming the old, young, newborn, and whoever else just happened to be there.

I know there is the Geneva Convention, and I know that we like to be the nice guys who do right by everybody, and under certain circumstances, we can afford to be the nice guys. This is not one of those times. If we took care of every single insurgent we merely wounded, they would turn right back around and do whatever they could to kill Americans or Iraqis.
