November 12, 2004 - You can't grow up in North Carolina without being subjected to endless reruns of The Andy Griffith Show. Though the show was a bit harder to find once I moved to San Francisco, I still made a point of seeking out the reruns wherever I could find them. The nostalgic show, produced by Sheldon Leonard and Danny Thomas, looks back to an idealized time and place that never really existed. The popularity of the show lasted a full eight seasons and it was, along with I Love Lucy and Seinfeld, one of the few shows to ever end its run while still at the top of the Nielsen ratings. Though the show has thrived in syndication ever since it went off the air (or morphed into the decidedly unfunny Mayberry R.F.D.), fans have long been waiting for a comprehensive DVD version of the show. Thankfully, Paramount has finally consented to release the entire first season in a remastered DVD format, available November 16.

Who saw SNL when Ron howard came on and they did a scene where Ron played himself as a kid and he and Otis came to the jail wearing white suits drunk and locked themselves in? I forget who played Andy and Barney but it was a great skit although I have never seen it since.
"How Do You Do, Mrs. Wi-ley?"
I loved that one, too. Who knew Grandma Walton was such a crook.
Some of the episodes were "touching" rather than funny, but I can't think of a one that would make my top 5 list.
Barney: "You with 'Hubcaps Lash' or you got your own racket?"
Yep. I think she met an untimely end. :(
No coffee,tea or punch,Thank you
I watched the E! Hollywood story on the family and she was really messed up on drugs..You would be to if you had to be married to Ryan O Neal...Just ask Farrah
I've seen part of that SNL skit. Eddie Murphy played Floyd, who turned his barbershop into an adult video store--LOL!
Also didn't care much for whats-his-name, Barney's cousin who was a deputy, too. He got in some row because of his sleepwalking on one episode.
Loved Aunt Bea. I'm an Elly man, not much on Helen. Floyd was great, Howard the County Clerk was not a good character. In real life I had a fraternity brother who was the spitting image of Ernest T. Bass, and would sometimes assume that character while drunk... so Ernest has always been a favorite.
"No coffee, tea or punch, thank yooooo."
Opie the Birdman always made my mom cry
You gonna punish me,Pa?
No,I want you to sit here and listen to those babybirds crying for their momma whose never coming back
I know waaaaaaay to much about a 60's show seeing as im only 21...DAMN YOU,TVLAND!!!
If that was around the same time that Don Knotts left, I agree. Barney's replacement was painful to watch.
No Emmett was strictly a color episode character. Blech!
The deputy you're talking about wasn't Barney's cousin, he was Floyd's nephew, Warren. A more irritating person I can not imagine.
Andy and Barney
Were they cousins or not?
I remember in the first couple of shows they mentioned they were but then dropped it
Not "pickles". Kerosene Cucumbers!
Yes and yes.
Andy was required viewing in my old frathouse. We'd gather in the main room and watch with all the sorority girls who'd giggle over our antics. Those were the days...
Decades later, I saw it on TV Land, , and ... I never realized the daughters were so beautiful! They seemed so old when I was a kid, but so young now.
I especially like Bobbi Joe, the brunette.
Ok, first off, TAGS is a top 5 show ever made IMNSHO. That being said, from what I've heard living here in NC, Andy IS a lib, not a Zell Miller dem. Secondly he and "Howard Sprague" still get together in Manteo and go drinking on the beach. Aunt Bea died a near recluse with a ton of cats in her house. Left all her money to some cat rescue place. She supposedly regretted working on TAGS because that overshadowed her work on Broadway and typecast her. Thats what I've HEARD, but obviously I dont know for sure.
My two favorite lines of the whole show are:
1. "How do you do Ms. Wiiiileeey" by Earnest T
2. "Poooor Horatio". This was said by Opie in the episode where Opie gives a penny or a nickel to the fundraiser at school to buy coats for poor kids. Andy is giving him a hard time about being Mr Moneybags (getting on him for not being more generous). Andy says, "Opie, did you know that there are 2 and a half children per town that is poor (dont quote me on that exact quote - the point was 1/2 a kid). Opie says "Ive never seen one of those pa" Andy: "One of what?" Opie: "Half a kid" Andy: "No Opie, thats a RATIO" Opie: "Pooooor Horatio" .....Just a great line....
