‘Anonymous’ resigns from CIA

* Says will now serve the national interest by talking publicly about Bin Laden and 9/11-Commission Report

WASHINGTON: A CIA analyst who wrote a book criticising the US war on terror resigned from the spy agency after it banned him from publicly discussing his views, his publicist said on Thursday.

Michael Scheuer wrote the book “Imperial Hubris: Why the West Is Losing the War on Terror” under the pen name “anonymous” and formally resigned from the intelligence agency on Friday, after 22 years of service.

In a statement to the press, Scheuer said that he blamed senior US leadership for allowing intelligence officers working against Osama Bin Laden to be made scapegoats for pre-Sept intelligence failures. He went on to say that while the CIA did not force his resignation, he concluded that there had been no national debate over the nature of the threat posed by Bin Laden and his supporters and that the intelligence agency needed reforming to address that threat.

Scheuer was chief of the CIA Counterterrorist Centre unit which focused on Bin Laden from 1996 to 1999 and remained a CIA analyst after that.

The December issue of The Atlantic Monthly published an open letter by Scheuer to US congressional intelligence committees in which he said that the key pre-Sept 11 intelligence failures were mainly the result of bad decisions by senior officials.

He said that while the 9/11 attacks were probably unpreventable, decisions made by senior officials showing “arrogance, bad judgment, disdain for expertise, and bureaucratic cowardice” had meant that the intelligence community did not operate optimally to defend America.

In June, prior to his book’s publication, Scheuer appeared in a series of media interviews, appearing on TV in silhouette and identified in print as “Mike.”

In the first week of August, CIA officials told him that he had to ask for advance permission before engaging in interviews as well as providing them with summaries of what would be discussed, Scheuer’s editor and publicist Christina Davidson said. She added that the CIA rejected every request, effectively banning him from speaking on the subject.

Scheuer’s book claimed that the United States was losing the war against terrorism and that current policies would strengthen its enemies in the Islamic world. would only make its enemies in the Islamic world grow stronger.

A statement released by his publicist said that following a cordial meeting with senior CIA officials on Tuesday, Scheuer decided that it his resignation would serve the interest of the intelligence community and the nation by allowing him to continue speaking publicly about Bin Laden, Al Qaeda and the 9/11-Commission Report.

The CIA made no comment. Scheuer is scheduled to appear on the CBS show “60 Minutes” on Sunday. reuters

The fact that it is sponsored by cbs indicates that it can not be taken seriously.

Goss has been running off tons of veterans. Veteran CIA guys just like this one who have ax's to grind.

If this is going to be on CBS, there's no way this is going to be anything that's helpful to the country. This guy has resigned, but I hope Goss is rooting out the rest of this nest of turncoats as quickly as possible.

CIA employees are prohibited from having unreported discussions with anyone from the media, or from publishing anything not previously cleared by the CIA. It is part of the employment agreement and meant to protect the nation's secrets. This jerk's ego and self interest was apparently more important than out nations security and he should have been prosecuted for publishing his book, if it he did indeed publish it without approval. When did it become ok for anyone in the CIA to spout off whenever they don't agree with their organization?

Exactly. And if it's 60 Minutes, this household does not tune it in. They are to be shunned.

One thing the anti-American moonbats got right is that there are people in the CIA who made a living off of their job. Nothing messes up a guys cash cow like reform. It'd be like the CEO of Boeing secretly exposing the failures in the Air Force if the contract procedure was shaken up.

Let me guess. The Communist Broadcasting System will breathlessly reveal that one of the Marxist Moles in the CIA is convinced that It's all Bush's fault.

There are reports in the Washington Times that "anonymous" was a ringleader in the band that was trying to undermine President Bush on Iraq through stories about WMD, dispersal of security forces, and numerous other pieces of bad news that embarrassed the White House. He quit. I would have fired him!

Agreed, Miz.

If it is on CBS, it is automatically suspect. I wouldn't beleive anything from them unless it is gone over with a fine tooth comb, and proven beyond any doubt.

CBS has a long way to go towards credibility as a 'news' source.

I don't think there's any doubt that he was the ringleader of the CIA's efforts to defeat President Bush.

Payback is hell. Time to purge the incompetents at the CIA.

"Anonymous" wrote a book where he argued that we should abandon Israel and open negotiations with Islamofascists so they stop being mean to us. He's one of the old school blueblood anti-Semites, the same types who wanted to appease Hitler in the 30's.

Scheur is ignorant trash. Here's a link that explains his garbage: Empircal Hubris

His call for the utter appeasement of the Islamofascists is a prescription for disaster!

What slays me about this guy is the brazenness. Here's a guy who was on the "OBL task force" for years and years and what? Accomplished what?

They monitored OBL's public statements really, really well?

His whines about the invasion of Iraq are equally bizarre. Apparently the geniuses like him in our intelligence services had Iraq totally under control! Which is an odd thing to believe given that we KNOW that either (1) Saddam was cheating on the sanctions OR (2) the CIA's intelligence on him sucked or (3) some combination.

As near as I can figure, he's the equivalent of a regulatory bureaucrat who's upset that his apple cart's been shaken up by deregulation.

His way, he WASN'T ACTUALLY SOLVING ANYTHING (and was never going to!) but at least they had an Ongoing Problem to point to which guaranteed an indefinite steady stream of funds and a role for him to play as an "expert" on such Ongoing Problems.

He hasn't been anonymous since the Boston Globe figured out who he was and printed it the week his book came out.

He was in charge of finding Bin Laden UNDER CLINTON-- NEVER UNDER BUSH.

I never found what Bell was reading from, but it sounded like this guy places most of the blame on the CIA lefty/klinton types and is going to finally put Tenet into the perspective he deserves.

Hmmmm, interesting. I didn't know that you could either quit or get fired from the CIA. I thought the only way out was in a pine box. Shows how little I know.
