Tom Brokaw Received Boos at University of Oklahoma/Nebraska Game
Eyewitness | Nov 13, 2004 | PhiKapMom

Posted on 11/13/2004 9:16:02 PM PST by PhiKapMom

It was announced during the second half that Tom Brokaw was in attendance at the University of Oklahoma/Nebraska game at Owen Field in Norman. The minute he was announced, you could hear loud boos from around the stadium.

Have no idea how he had the nerve to return to OU after his debacle of a speech for graduation last May. I think he received louder boos then when Nebraska came out, and even more than the penalty we got for fans throwing oranges onto the field near the end of the game.

Chalk this one up to flyover country that detests the mainstream news media. You probably will never hear this from the media except our local radio but it was hilarious. Everyone around where we sit are Bush fans and after they stopped booing, they started laughing at the reaction of everyone. Then they launched into a discussion about how biased the so-called mainstream media was in the election and how people like Brokaw should stay out of the red states. It made me really proud of the Sooner fans -- this truly is Bush Country.

His whole speech was about how the WWII was the greatest generation and there never will be another one

Sounds like Tom hasn't kept up on his reading. According to some pundits, the current generation just starting to leave college (so-called "Millennials") is very much like the "Greatest Generation".

Thought you guys would enjoy this! Nebraska didn't show up to win the game -- it was unbelieveable that they played to run out the clock from the beginning. Nebraska needs a new coach if you ask me. What happened to the West Coast offense? It failed to show up the way it looked!

You're right about not showing up to win. But that's kind of a late season thing. Nebraska Coach Callahan has gotten blown out everytime he tries to call a game in the West Coast Offense like he really wants. This year's quarterback, Joe Daily, just isn't accurate enough to run that offense. Whenever they try, he throws 4-5 interceptions a game, and complete well under 50 percent of their passes. When he pulls it back and favors the running game, they've managed to at least not kill themselves, if not always win.

In my opinion, Coach Callahan is already playing for next season. Frank Solich was a good guy, and a good coach, but he couldn't keep up Osborne's talent level through his recruiting. His fate was sealed the minute the new AD was hired. Callahan was hired for one thing - recruiting. If he doesn't work out after 3 or 4 seasons, they'll can him for a better coach, but the talent level the new coach finds is expected to be competitive with OU and Texas - which Solich had lost.

It would have been nice if Callahan could have gelled with the old players, but he didn't. He'll have to build his own team through recruiting - Solich's guys aren't responding to him. And the defensive coordinator he hired - Kevin Cosgrove - is a joke. Nebraska will get better. But there are probably a few more changes coming before the OU-Nebraska game returns to what its supposed to be.

Good luck in the national title hunt. Oklahoma over USC!

What a great story. Thanks for sharing it because you are so right, we never would have heard it but for FR and good Freepers. We sure like good Bushie stories in OH.

Hahaha! You won't read this in the lamestream! In most of America, guys like Brokaw, Rather and Jennings have the status of unwelcome foreign visitors.

"I hope it made him cry."

Maybe his pal Jennings can announce that "America had a temper tantrum tonight."

If the local or school paper reports this tomorrow, will you post it?

His son-in-law is an OU alum and huge Sooner fan

His name is Allen Fry. I know him, he is a real nice guy. He's a radiologist, married to Brokaw's daughter Jennifer (also a doctor).

It's been a while, and I don't recall much about his politics, but from what I can remember, he would be appreciably to the right of Tom Brokaw.

HA! I wish those primadonas would venture out into God's country more often, they'd find out just how unpopular they are with the real people.

They have so many falling on their knees in their own little enclaves that they actually believe they're somebody.

One has to wonder at what kind of a group would care if Brokaw was in attendance. Easily impressionable people most likely.

"I think he received louder boos then when Nebraska came out..."

I would hope so. Generally speaking, the Cornshuckers are respectable people. The OU/NU rivalry was one of the biggest games of late November until the Big 12 was formed, and wouldn't allow the two teams to schedule "non-conference" games during the two off years in north/south division play.

Brokaw, on the other hand, is maybe the most palatable of the three alphabet anchors, which isn't saying much...

Little Red was the coolest mascot in all of college sports, ever. He's just a memory now, because of liberals.
