Cheney Hospital Tests Find No Abnormality
2 minutes ago

By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites), who has a history of heart trouble, went to a hospital Saturday after experiencing shortness of breath. Two tests found no abnormalities, an aide said.

A pacemaker implanted in the 63-year-old Cheney's chest three years ago indicated no irregularities during the past 90 days, Mary Matalin, a spokeswoman for the vice president, said. The device gives doctors a three-month readout. She said an electrocardiogram, which measures the heart's electrical activity, showed no change.

Cheney, who has had four heart attacks, although none as vice president, returned Thursday night from a pheasant hunting trip in South Dakota with a cold that left him short of breath, she said.

The vice president, who joined President Bush (news - web sites) on Friday for meetings with British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites), felt fine otherwise, but that as a precaution his cardiologist, Dr. Jonathan Reiner, recommended he go to George Washington University Hospital for tests.

"Everything looks great, Matalin said. "He's walking around from room to room in his street clothes just waiting for the blood work."

She said Cheney was driven in a motorcade from his residence a few miles from the hospital and walked in under his own power.

"He was doing this just as a precaution," Matalin said, adding that Cheney did not need an ambulance.

The president was notified by his chief of staff, Andy Card, shortly after Bush returned from a bike ride Saturday at a Secret Service training facility outside Washington, White House spokesman Ken Lisaius said.

In June 2001, Cheney had a pacemaker implanted in his chest. At his annual heart checkup on May 11, doctors determined that the pacemaker, called an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, was working fine and never had had to assist his heart.

The device is designed to activate automatically if needed to regulate the patient's heartbeat.

Ahead of the fall presidential campaign, Cheney dismissed speculation that his health might keep him from running again with Bush. He said his health had been good and that he could not think of any circumstances that would prompt to decline the role. He kept up a heavy travel schedule during Bush's re-election campaign, often traveling with his wife, Lynne Cheney.

His first heart attack occurred in 1978, when he was 37. He had a second in 1984, and after suffering his third heart attack, in 1988, Cheney had quadruple bypass surgery to clear clogged arteries.

On Nov. 22, 2000, Cheney suffered what doctors called a "very slight" heart attack and had an angioplasty to open a clogged artery.

Cheney was back in the hospital on March 5, 2001, after complaining of chest pains. Doctors performed another angioplasty to reopen the same artery.

After his fourth heart attack, Cheney quit smoking, began regular daily exercises for 30 minutes on a treadmill and said he began watching his diet.

I am a democrat living in Michigan. I did not vote for the Bush/Cheney ticket. However, I will pray for a speedy recovery for our V.P and hope that he is just experiencing fatigue from campaigning. I respect the presidency and it is my sincere hope that more people would be like minded. The American voters have spoken by re-electing George Bush. Not all democrats are filled with hate, folks. Get well, Mr. Vice President.

Thanks for your kind words for AMERICA's Vice President. If only more Democrats really understood what good men Bush and Cheney are it would be better for our country.

IF you want a real eye opener, a clue to why the Dems lost again, go over to www.democraticunderground.com and see the comments by the people that have hijacked the Democrat Party.

Thanks for the reply! I have lurked around this site for many months and was reluctant to post for fear of being ridiculed. I am a moderate dem, who is quite frankly, disgusted with my party at the moment. I am from a fairly conservative town; it is comprised of mostly working class citizens who want the best for their children. We believe in God, do not feel it is o.k "to live and let live", etc. What personally disturbs me is how ugly and devisive our country has become at the present time. For pete's sake, my father and step-father are both republicans and I love them both dearly. They both are caring, considerate, brilliant men. We may disagree on political issues, but that's all it is, a difference of opinion. Anyway, thanks for the reply.

I know of what you speak. The hatred is truly disgusting and I will not even try to defend anyone that wishes harm to the Vice president of the United States. I cannot understand why more democrats aren't like minded as I. Surely they realize that bitterness and vitriol only re-enforces "out of touch with middle America?" Sigh. Thank-you for welcoming me to your site, it is much appreciated.

I was a poll watcher in a suburb of Akron on election day. the Dems sent over one in every precinct we were at.

The poll workers & the Dem (an attorney) were frightened to death of me. I told them (and showed them throughout the day) that I was NOT there to cause trouble but to insure that they could NOT be falsely accused of fraud (cause I was watching) and I wanted to make sure no dead, absentee, etc voted other than provisionally. At the end of the very long day(about 10 PM) we ALL exchanged hugs & realized we were all in the process together for the good of America

The Dem attorney & I hit it off well. We talked movies, bicycling, kayaking & some politics. Most think I am a lib due to my outdoorish life style & my vegetarian diet. He is a strict catholic & his wife & daughter are both Republican. We had a real heart to heart re his reconciliation of his faith & the abortion issues. He actually sat there and cried. We exchanged cards & have been corresponding via email.

open honest dialog is what works. I find it difficult to be with my emotive democratic acquaintances any longer. the chasm just is too big, it seems

That was commendable of you to volunteer your time at the polls. It is quite clear to me that poll-watchers are needed to prevent fraud. The stories of intimidation are overblown. It is my belief that all the nonsense coming out now is just sour grapes at losing(the dems). I have friends that are republicans, as well as democrats. We have political discussions that result in heated arguments, but we still are friends! We can agree to disagree.

I am quite disturbed to see the Hillary in 08 chatter by the dems. I am also dismayed at Dean for DNC chair. I feel like screaming...wake UP! Oh well, maybe Rudy or McCain will run, I'd vote for either of them in a heartbeat. By the way...I never vote a straight ticket in any election, always split. I vote republican more often than not at the state and local level.

I too appreciate your kind words and I'm glad you posted. I believe that many or even most folks here at FR are open to an honest dialogue and an open, respectful debate of issues. That sort of thing isn't censored off this site.

Unfortunately, we get a lot of troublemakers who post disruption and who aren't interested in intelligent dialogue. Sometimes the Freepers end up lumping all Dems, newcomers etc. into that category and make too-hasty judgments. Sometimes it's hard to tell about a poster for a while. If you continue to post, others will come to recognize your screenname, perhaps check your posts out on the In Forum link on your homepage, and realize if you are genuinely interested in dialogue. A few won't of course though and you'll have to be prepared for that too.

Welcome to FR.

Prayers for the VP. He is a nice and SMART man. I believe he went in to make sure it was not another heart episode. Not to make lite of it, but he had 4 heart attacks. I think he is tough enough to survive this. Heck, he survived Edwards. Edwards was talking a half hour after his throat was figuratively slit. Edwards couldn't shake is head "no" after that!

I hope the Dems become a respectable party again. We need a healthy two party system in this country, and right now one of the parties is just plain sick......

I know LOTS of good, patriotic, moral Democrats who feel the same way you do. I wish you well.
