Oh, I don't smoke, and never have.

An interesting version of the Atlas Shrugged strike. It might work, given the election and the trend toward tort reform. Most people I know are sick of the extortion lawsuits.

I smoked for about 17 years then stopped - because didn't really think I wanted to smoke. If I start smoking again, I'm not going to get all upset about it.

It lacks the depth of character of "Atlas Shrugged." ROTFL... I love Rand, she saved my life. But her characters are as one dimensional as a steam-rolled Bugs Bunny.

Maybe he was being sarcastic. Atlas shrugged is really famous for painfully bad writing when it comes to the characters and dialogue.

I mean, I loved reading it. I lay on my couch for three days straight over Christmas vacation, still in my bed clothes, and read it straight through because it was the first time I'd ever heard this type of philosophy. I was a grad student in anthropology being fed Marxism 24-7 on an IV drip. It was like drowning in warm mucus. Then I got my hands on Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged and I swear I had dreams that the sky was opening. It was a turning point.
But, like you said, rollicking dialogue and sensitive character development, no. Ayn Rand was no George Elliot. She was a woman with a mission and a style like a steamroller, bless her cold little heart.

A modern day John Galt. Can I get an 'amen' from Hank Reardon or Dagney Taggart?
Oh, and thanks for the book review.

"This picture will likely increase cigarette sales, and probably to teens especially."
When I was a teen ('71 to '77)this sort of statement mystified me and still does. I didn't know anyone who ever did anything (like drugs or booze or cigs.)for the image.
Hell in Jr. High and Highschool guys would actually say "Don't do it. If you start smoking you'll be sorry!"

Am I the only one who doesn't like
Marlboro Marine?
How about this:
Rough and ready
Or this:
True Grit - the real thing

"i did, for 35 years, and it didn't kill me. stopped because it cost toooo dam nuch." I was about to quit for the same reason, but found out how cheap it was to roll your own. Better and fresher tobacco, too. And no additives, etc. Buy it by the pound. Less than a buck a pack -- and that's with filter tubes.
Smoking hasn't killed me yet, and I started puffin' years before Lucky Strike Green went to war. It might have effected my brain some, as some of my replies here would clearly show.
What would probably kill me would be if Free Republic were to crash for a week.

Wouldn't a steamrolled Bugs be two-dimensional -- a flat plane, not a line?
On the other hand, an un-steamrolled Bugs Bunny is likewise two-d.

(Kerry "honors a faith tradition." Bush believes in "God." You do the math.)
I smoked for 20 years before quitting, but I'm no nico-Nazi. In fact, I love it when the nico-Nazis get their panties in a wad over something like the Marlboro Marine...

What happens when an entire industry that has been demonized says, in essence, "Screw you. We're shutting down until the public, through its elected officials (and not the courts) decides that people have a right to do things that are dangerous, even deadly." We, alas, lose even more of our option of personal choice.

Actually, I found Rand's characters one-dimensional, but nevertheless more complex than Trevor Barnett.
