When I was a teen ('71 to '77)this sort of statement mystified me and still does. I didn't know anyone who ever did anything (like drugs or booze or cigs.)for the image.

Hell in Jr. High and Highschool guys would actually say "Don't do it. If you start smoking you'll be sorry!"

Sorry. Most of what teens do IS for image.
