Marine Whose Photo Lit Up Imaginations Keeps His Cool (Famous Iraq War Picture Alert)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 11/13/03 | Patrick J. McDonnell

Miller is the young man whose gritty, war-hardened portrait appeared Wednesday in the Los Angeles Times, taken by Luis Sinco, a Times photographer traveling with Miller's unit: Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment.

In the full-frame photo, taken after more than 12 hours of nearly nonstop deadly combat, Miller's camouflage war paint is smudged. He sports a bloody nick on his nose. His helmet and chin strap frame a weary expression that seems to convey the timeless fatigue of battle.

And there is the cigarette, of course, drooping from the right side of his mouth in a manner that Bogart or John Wayne would have approved of. Wispy smoke drifts off to his left.

The image, printed in more than 100 newspapers, has quickly moved into the realm of the iconic.

Watch for the liberals to say that the Islamic pukes are sensitive to smokers; it's one of the reasons that they hate america.

Yeah, the guy that has the model that shows over 100,000 "civilian" casaulties better crank in a factor for second-hand smoke.

This picture should adorn the cover of "TIME" magazine's "Person of the Year" issue. And...the person of the year should be the United States Military. Of course, the secular, anti-religion, anti-USA, anti-military, "traitor" Democrat vermin at TIME would never consider this. They will fawn all over Yassar Arafat or Michael Moore & Harvey Weinstein!!!

"The American Soldier" was Time's choice last year--if I remember correctly.

Reminds me of a young Sam Elliott without the 'stache.

Or a young Robert Mitchum...

The Los Angeles Times and other publications have received scores of e-mails wanting to know about this mysterious figure. Many women, in particular, have inquired about how to contact him. How many girls will be asking to date him when he comes home :)? Man of the year? It sounds like it.

Fascinating picture. There's something strong and lively in the fellow's eyes that speaks of what he's seen and done and who he is. Deathly tired, but he doesn't look at all whiny or defeated. After twelve straight hours of combat, he looks alert, intelligent, observant, and and full of fight. It's the look of a warrior. I appreciate the work this brave young man has done for his country, and I appreciate his modesty.

Did you ever notice that it is the liberal pukes from the 60's that all used to suck in marijuana smoke like it was mountain fresh air that are so violently opposed to the thought that anyone else should be allowed to smoke anything.

Agree, different time different place. In addition, I hope we don't have to spill Marines blood at the level of Iwo, Tarawa, Tripoli, Hue, the Canal, Lebanon - well you get the picture.

Happy Birthday Marines

Semper Fi!

Safe hunting!

Your proposal is absolutely 'spot on'.

Of course, the secular, anti-religion, anti-USA, anti-military, "traitor" Democrat vermin at TIME would never consider this. They will fawn all over Yassar Arafat or Michael Moore & Harvey Weinstein!!!

Your conclusion is also absolutely correct.

The baby faced photo is probably an old one. He looks
thinner in the Marlboro photo, and like a man.

We pray for our brave men and women serving in the war on terror!

In view of the fact that he has a "bloody nick on his nose" I think John Kerry would have already applied for at least one purple heart and a dismissal from duty.

Thank God Kerry is stuck away in the Senate for at least 4 more years!

Related thread with Smokin's identity, etc.

He Fights On With Dwindling Supply of Smokes [Marlboro Man]

As the troops moved into Bagdad last year, we had the pic of Cigar Guy.
Now, as the troops move through Fallujah, we have the pic of Marlboro/Cigarette Guy.

Libs don't like. Tough. Give them a quarter and let them call someone who cares.

Seeing those kinds of pics [our military personnel in their circumstance] gives the rest of us feelings of pride and honor for these brave military men and women.
