'Moral Values' Myth
Washington Post ^ | 11/12/04 | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 11/12/2004 12:40:48 PM PST by An Old Marine

In 1994, when the Gingrich revolution swept Republicans into power, ending 40 years of Democratic hegemony in the House, the mainstream press needed to account for this inversion of the Perfect Order of Things. A myth was born. Explained the USA Today headline: "ANGRY WHITE MEN: Their votes turn the tide for GOP."

Overnight, the revolution of the Angry White Male became conventional wisdom. In the 10 years before the 1994 election there were 56 mentions of angry white men in the media, according to LexisNexis. In the next seven months there were more than 1,400.

....

Ten years and another stunning Democratic defeat later, and liberals are at it again. The Angry White Male has been transmuted into the Bigoted Christian Redneck.

If you think about it this is even worse news for the liberals than just blaming it on us bible-thumpers. It means they were wrong on all counts.

Just the libs making excuses for things. It's how they live their lives and it's how they run their campaigns.

Retrospectively you can explain (away) anything. Prospectively, no one expected the number of values voters that showed up.

However, there really does remain one somewhat angry white man that I know well. Also, suspect there remains many more.

Unfortunately, they are becoming the minority.

When the left can't win, they try to demonize and marginalize their opposition. By equating "values" with some redneck Bible-thumping straw man, the left drive themselves further into delusion and denial. The election was a victory for integrity, character, and normalcy. These are not restricted to any one religion, and this means the Dems are in bigger trouble than they admit.

One thing that Krauthammer doesn't mention here is his overwhelming dislike of the South and Southern folks. I've seen him on more than one occasion rip into Southern culture, including the whole stupid Confederate Battle Flag "controversy." He also made a stink about the "Passion of the Christ," which was widely embraced in the South.

Krauthammer is a smart dude, but personally, I find him to be an elite.

Krauty-poo and Rush both have this one wrong. They are missing a key point. Elections outcomes are decided by the marginal transaction (just like prices). In this election the marginal turnout of the Rupublican vote exceeded the marginal turnout of the Dim vote. And the cultural issues (e.g. gay marriage, abortion) were the motivating factors. The secular elitists can try to rationalize this away. But they are engaged in self-deception.

This is not just an academic issue. If Bush screws the voters who came out for the cultural issues with anything less than Scalia/Thomas caliber Supreme Court nominees that he fights for and gets confirmed! (are you listening Frist and Specter?) the pubies will pay dearly down the road.

Let's hope the "Stupid Party" gets it this time.

"When the left can't win, they try to demonize and marginalize their opposition."

They do indeed. That's what all of my lib. friends do when they know they are losing any and all arguments I have with them. Drives 'em nuts! I also pray that they never *get it* with their string of election losses. Apparently, the gay lobby hasn't gotten it either. Already filing lawsuits to overturn the VOTERS decision in the 11 states where gay marriage was on the ballot (and lost)!

"Moral values" is a liberal code phrase that means anti-gay.

Bush will screw the social/christian conservatives for sure.
Its the old republican bait and switch. He will spend his political capital on finalizing his tax cuts and some kind of social security "reform" that funnels lots of money into
investment funds administered by his cronies.

and THEY will be back in 4 years with yet another vague cultural issue to rally the homefolk.

Did someone say "Angry American?"

by Toby Keith

American Girls and American Guys
We'll always stand up and salute
We'll always recognize
When we see Ole Glory Flying
There's a lot of men dead
So we can sleep in peace at night
When we lay down our head

My daddy served in the army
Where he lost his right eye
But he flew a flag out in our yard
Till the day that he died
He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister and me
To grow up and live happy
In the land of the free.

Now this nation that I love
Has fallen under attack
A mighty sucker punch came flying in
From somewhere in the back
Soon as we could see clearly
Through our big black eye
Man, we lit up your world
Like the 4th of July

Hey Uncle Sam
Put your name at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty
Started shaking her fist
And the eagle will fly
And there's gonna be hell
When you hear Mother Freedom
Start ringing her bell
And itll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Ahhh Brought to you Courtesy of the Red White and Blue

Ohhh Justice will be served
And the battle will rage
This big dog will fight
When you rattle his cage
And you'll be sorry that you messed with
The U.S. of A.
'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass
It's the American way

Hey Uncle Sam
Put your name at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty
Started shaking her fist
And the eagle will fly
And there's gonna be hell
When you hear Mother Freedom
Start ringing her bell
And itll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Brought to you Courtesy of the Red White and Blue

Uhhh Ohhh
Of the Red, White and Blue
Ohhh Ohh Oh
Of My Red, White and Blue

Exactly! The myth of the angry white man is that he's always resided in the Democrat Party. Heck, they're not just angry...they're hate-filled, psychotics.

one mistake of this article is that by watching Prime Time TV you can see that men are not angry they are stupid. Women are desperate and men dumb. Republicans are men therefore Republicans are dumb men.

The angry man did not leave their party, it is the values and stories of conservatives which has left them.

It's my opinion that the moral values motivation that drove some people to the polls was NOT because they like the Republican party. It was a reaction to the orgy of self-congratulation on the part of the radical gay groups who were floating on a cloud of 'sanctioned' marriages from Massachusetts to San Francisco.

If the Republican party thinks these people were motivated by something Karl Rove cobbled together, or some focus group bullet point, they're wrong. These voters were in the right place at the right time, and the Republicans were fortunate enough to benefit from it. If there is no such supra-party event, (ie. if the loony left actually shuts up for the year before the next election) and if the Republicans don't do something concrete in the next four years, moral values voters will sit on their hands.

Say what you like about us evangelicals, we're not gullible enough to have the wool pulled over our eyes more than once.
