"Deirdre Faegre was suspended for a week after repeatedly disobeying school officials who told her not to perform gymnastic stunts during lunchtime."

That's why she was suspended. Maybe folks around here will cry foul but she was apparently told to stop "repeatedly". It doesn't seem like an unreasonable request. Actions have consequences. Perhaps the punishment is too harsh, perhaps not. Then there's the father's response, "Deirdre's father, Leland Faegre, said it was absurd to suspend his daughter for doing gymnastics when students were allowed to play basketball and other sports. "Contact sports, apparently, are fine. But this one is so dangerous it requires the cartwheel cops," Faegre said."

Now I don't know about you folks but my father would have taken me to the wood shed for doing something that I was told "repeatedly" not to do in school. But hey I just a hick from Texas. The father's argument misses the point completely.

The school officials are prancing ninnies and should be ashamed of themselves.

As we came to a corner while driving, I asked my kids, "How many stop signs are there?"

"one"

"It should only take ONE 'stop,' to get you to stop. You shouldn't have to be told repeatedly to stop what you are doing."

if a child continues to misbehave after repeatedly being told, then you get the parents involved. going from repeated "stop that" to a five day suspension is absurd.

You nailed it. The child was told not to do the cartwheels. One may dispute the wisdom of the teacher, but the teacher IS the person responsible. If someone would have gotten hurt; the teacher would be responsible. With actions, comes responsibilites.

My parents made it very clear to me that the trouble I got into at school would pale in comparison with the trouble waiting for me when I got home. This parent has just instructed his child that there is no authority, there are no consequences to your actions, and that 'even if you know you are doing wrong', it's OK. I wonder if he'll be asking "What did I do wrong" when his daughter presents him with grandchildren before she graduates?

If they told her not to do, she shouldn't do it.
Period.
When parents begin defending their children for deliberately breaking the rules they are not doing them any favors.
When I was in school we had to wear a belt if our pants had belt loops. It was a goofy rule but it was a rule and there was a penalty for disobeying it.
I can see a danger in a crowded lunchroom if one kid is doing cartwheels. If was eating I wouldn't appreciate it.
How many parents here would discourage their children from doing acrobatics in the kitchen during dinner?

Yep. Told repeatedly to stop. My kid would also be in the doghouse for disobeying.
