While Yasser Arafat is being remembered by many as the father of modern terrorism, the United Nations headquarters in New York City is honoring the Palestinian leader by lowering its flag to half-mast.
Yasser Arafat and Kofi Annan |
"Deeply moved" by news of his death, U.N. General Secretary Kofi Annan gave Arafat a "special tribute" before the General Assembly this afternoon after conveying condolences to his wife and daughter.
"By signing the Oslo accords in 1993 he took a giant step towards the realization of this vision," Annan said in a statement delivered by a spokesman.
"It is tragic that he did not live to see it fulfilled."
In a briefing in New York, spokesman Fred Eckhard said the secretary-general has asked Terje Roed-Larsen, the U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East peace process and personal representative to the Palestinian Authority, to represent him at President Arafat's funeral in Cairo.
Eckhard said Annan was not going to the funeral because it was impossible for him to make the travel arrangements on such short notice.
The U.N. chief, he noted, travels commercially and to get to Cairo by tomorrow probably would have required a private plane.
Annan was not sending any kind of message by not attending, Eckhard asserted.
He noted that the General Assembly, in a series of rulings over the years, had accorded Arafat a status equivalent to a head of state.
Annan decided Arafat should be accorded the same status in death as he obtained during his life, and the General Assembly president agreed, the spokesman said.
Flying that rag at half mast isn't good enough. It should be taken down and flushed down the toilet.
That corrupt terrorist adoring and abetting UN should be run out of the USA.
Today was my "duty day" at the Coast Guard base.
Of the 6 of us in the Coast Guard Auxiliary
4 are Viet Nam Vets 1 Vietnam era
and the last person no prior military
but retired law enforcement.
I joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary Oct 2001
No, the UN is immorally Corrupt and Decayed! Kofi makes Arafat look like a good guy!
This kind of news makes me feel like having a little target practice.
Burn it...and lets do something to the flag as well.
Perhaps Brit Hume was just pausing to honor the day upon which part of the 'Palestinian Problem' was solved...??? I'm just guessing, of course.
===
Pathetic.

"Perhaps Brit Hume was just pausing to honor the day upon which part of the 'Palestinian Problem' was solved...???"
No, he decided Arafat was newsworthy
And US Veterans were secondary.
If Arafat wanted Palestinian statehood he would accepted the Barak/Clinton deal -- an incredible deal (for the Palestinians) that's never likely to be presented again. This rejection led rational people to conclude that Arafat didn't want either peace or a Palestinian state (unless it was built upon the dead bodies of every Jew in Israel), but a perpetual state of war.
Merit to his cause? Only if one sympathizes with terrorists.
This is an outrage. Useless Nation strikes again. They have lost their credibility period.
You spent the day in very good company no doubt. Happy Veteran's Day Tonk and many more.
Dust to dust
One less terrorist
For US to bust.
RIH ARAFAT!
Incredible!
If Arafat wanted Palestinian statehood he would accepted the Barak/Clinton deal -- an incredible deal (for the Palestinians),,,
__It's hard to say what the deal
was...according to Richard Ben Cramer, it involved dividing the West Bank into 3 regions all separated by Israeli-controlled
spaces...Arafat could never accept that..that was occupation in another form
that's never likely to be presented again. This rejection led rational people to conclude that Arafat didn't want either peace or a Palestinian state (unless it was built upon the dead bodies of every Jew in Israel),
but a perpetual state of war..
__I said Arafat was corrupt...but his cause wasn't...which is why he differs from Saddam Hussein...he was a failure,,,he could have become a statesman...but he couldnt handle it and reverted to his old ways...
The cause of a Palestinian state for a stateless group of people is supported by President Bush.
All sources I've read say that Arafat was given nearly everything he wanted, but rejected it. I highly doubt he expected to be given such a deal, and he most likely was ill-prepared when it happened.
"I said Arafat was corrupt...but his cause wasn't."
I know what you said. But you continue to naiviely assume that Arafat's cause was Palestinian statehood (which is indeed a just cause), not the destruction of Israel and a perpetual state of war.
God bless our Vets. They are true Americans, not those who page homage to a murdering terrorist.
I refuse to listen to the TV coverage.
un flag is the UNflag. Doesn't matter what they do with it cause all it stands for is Opportuni$t Pocket$
They'll probably drape the UN building in black bunting when Castro dies.
