Soldier is back in the U.S. on leave after his Chowchilla house burns.
Terry Hitchcock, a soldier stationed in Iraq, is home in Chowchilla on emergency leave to deal with the aftermath of his family's house fire. He hugs his 8-year-old son, Brandon, in the doorway of the burned home under a flag sign yellowed from the fire.
Taking emergency leave from Iraq to return to a fire-gutted house in Chowchilla wasn't the happiest homecoming for Army Spec. Terry Hitchcock, but he and his family were thankful to be together Wednesday.
"I just want to take care of my family and get them settled somewhere," said Hitchcock, 42.
He must return to action Nov. 23, giving him only a brief time to find a new home and help his wife and children find new clothing and furniture. After that, he'll be gone until at least February.
The fire that caused $80,000 in damage started in an electrical plug or cord, fire investigators told the Hitchcocks. The family had no renters insurance and lost nearly all their belongings.

GOOD NEWS!!!
The Table Mountain Casino and Rancheria today announced a $50,000 donation to the Hitchcock family. It was in this morning's Fresno Bee.
Thank you to everyone who contributed or will contribute more. Tell me what you did here on this thread and I will try to get the Bee to publish it or, at the very least, pass it on to the Hitchcock family so they know that someone is always looking out for them as they do for us.
God bless you all and our troops wherever they may be.
Good news, indeed! There really are angels among us.....and many of them are right here on FR. :-)
Marvelous news. That should give them a good head start on replacing things.
OK, we've just got to help this guy out. I just sent off a check.
I cannot tell you how glad I am to hear this.
That's really impressive! But I hope people that were considering sending a card and/or donation still go ahead and send their support to this family facing many challenges. Thanks for keeping us posted.
I have no affiliation with the family and they don't know me from Adam but I will continue to do what I can.
God bless our troops wherever they may be.
That is great news.
I was just working on thier computer, adding a larger hard drive and RAM and a 56k modem. I plan to ship it on Monday morning, although compared with $50K, a used Dell P3 might not be that important now ... well, even if they decide to buy a newer one, this one would still be great for the kids maybe.
BTTT!!!!!!!
BTTT!!!!!!
Can you tell me where to send a check? And who to make it out to? Thank you. Great news on the $50K !!!
