You fail to grasp the symbolic status that the Pope holds, as leader of the Christian West. To think that a Baptist or Methodist is unaffected by what the Pope does is as naive as those "blue staters" who can't understand that Islam hates ALL of the West.
To put it bluntly, an Islamic attack on the Vatican would be an attack on all Christians, not just Catholics.

On behalf of the rest of Christendom, especially the protestants of whom I am one, I'd like to apologize to the Jews for the Vatican's comments today.
The Vatican was obviously referring to Arafat's claims in English to want peace. Claims that were not backed up by his actions or his claims spoken in Arabic.
I'll thank you not to go ascribing for me what I do and don't believe per your singularly subjective interpretation of direct quotes, historical events and objective reality.
