The Pope is not the symbolic leader of Christiandom and even most Islamics know there are plenty of different branches that oppose him. They all know also that the Greek Church and Latin Church are different.

The Pope is the symbolic leader of Christendom. He is the spiritual head of the Catholic church -- of 1.2 to 1.4 billion Christians out of a total of 2 billion Christians. He is also the head of the Apostolic church, the church founded by Christ.
