EVERYONE should have these two programs as well. They kill those nasty SPYWARE programs that slow your machine down and report your surfing habits to advertisers.
Spybot Search and Destroy
http://download.com.com/3000-8022-10122137.html
Ad-Aware
http://download.com.com/3000-2094-10045910.html?legacy=cnet
Install both programs, then UPDATE them online for the latest definitions. Doing a complete scan with both programs and using the "immunize" function of Spybot should kill lots of bad stuff and prevent future spyware from being installed on your computer.
Yes.
A couple of other 'must have' programs that watch for 'intrusions':
Prevx (free home edition)
http://www1.prevx.com/
WinPatrol (free home edition)
http://www.winpatrol.com/
These watch for any program trying to install itself or change your current install. They aren't for novices, but aren't that difficult to figure out.
BTTT
I used it 5-6 years ago.
It missed some things then.
I'm not very willing to depend only on it.
Does it fight with Norton or vice versa if both are used?
Bump for later. Thanks to all those in the know contributing to this thread.
thanks for the post. I downloaded it and like the new GUI.
It used my old serial # and it actually kept my mail settings it seems.
and it seems to catch viruses that 6.0 didn't... 6.0 would actually give popups about viruses, asking to run the program...but then wouldn't clean them. This version seems to have solved that.
The below are from Usenet posts in microsoft.public.windowsxp.general and
microsoft.public.security.virus.
I keep them around for the links just in case. Take them as is I haven't used everything here and cannot vouche for their safety or if they work.

I've had v6 for quite some time. Works like a champ on any machine I've tried it on.
I even found virii on a "protected" network machine at a previous employer.
downloaded and ran AntiVir...so far it found 10 trojans that AVS 7 didn't....
I always wonder why Norton etc dont have trojan removal tools....but they can find them. Its like cars were 20-30 years ago... no temp gauge, just a light that came on when you overheated...in case you couldn't tell by the way your car just died and steam was pouring out of the hood.
oh yeah...if they put trojan removal on anti virus programs....you wouldn't spend another $40 to buy their trojan removal software
It was easy to do with right click in prev windows versions, but not now. I like to mess with my settings a lot and it was nice to have a shortcut to control panel...I cant figure out how to do it in XP thanks
You can also right click on the desktop, select new, select shortcut and then type Control Panel or control.exe into the box. click next and name the shortcut, click finish.
That's it.
PC Cillian 2005 has trojan detection/removal and network virus detection/removal along with spyware and regular virus detection/removal. The spyware removal isn't as robust as AdAware and Spybot BUT it did find a dashbar that both of those missed. It was a BHO (browser helper object) that Google put on the built in search in IE. So instead of getting the standard search dialog when using the built in search I got a Google search in the sidebar. PCC removed it
Look at it here.

Anybody familiar with this virus?
I remember reading something a while back but can't find it now.
Got it! Good!
SPLENDID AV product; I've recommended it to countless friends and clients. I ran it side by side with Norton and McAfee for about a month, and it consistently caught and eliminated threats that the other two either missed altogether, or else found but declared unfixable.

OK, I am confused.. I have XP home with sp2. I use Sybase personal as a firewall. I have sypbot and adaware.
I also use Norton Systemworks, which has antivirus, a fast disk cleaner and a defrag program that in the past was better than the MS defrag. Each year I buy a new version of N's Systemworks because the anti-virus subsription runs out. Also, because I can buy it on CD I can use it on all of my family's machines (it also comes with a rebate, which I always fail to remember to turn in.)
Here is my question - My Norton's Systemworks subsrcripion expires shortly (I like the "fast and safe clean up" and defrag.) Should I re-up Norton's or try something free? I just downloaded Anti-vir. Do I need something else or something better...?
Thanks for the input.
If I were you I would look at AVG or just get the Norton AV or Norton Internet Security if you must have a Symantec product. XP has enough tools that you don't need Systemworks.
The only reason I quit using Norton because it is bloatware and drags the system more than the others but it is top-notch at what it does.
