It was a mandate, these Maps help illustrate that

After reading of Al Franken's attempt to diminish the recent Republican victory and national mandate, especially his remarks about "desert states", I decided to take a closer look at the spread of the vote differential. Taking 51,5 to 48.5 as the starting point, which candidate would gain more states (or lose) if we took those states, which had a lower differential, off the map. These two maps show the difference:

States carried by Bush wear margin of victory was equal to or greater than 51.5 to 48.5

States carried by Kerry wear margin of victory was equal to or greater than 51.5 to 48.5

Yes, Bush loses a state or two in this, but I think the Kerry map looks pathetic in comparison.

Your right, my error. WV should indeed be red in the first map.

The 3-D county map is the best one I've seen to illustrate how small area-wise is blue nation. See Best 2004 Electoral/county map Yet but sadly many of the graphics including the 3-D one are gone. Here is a clip of the 3-D map beign built as the results came in on election night: http://gis.esri.com/esriclips/clip.cfm?ClipID=321

Here is another map that allows you to zoom in for better detail within a state: http://alt.cimedia.com/ajc/pdf/elect_results_uscounty.pdf

Better save what you find since these things seem to be expiring.

Al Franken is a pathetic little man whose spiritual homeland is some European sewer. The prarie rose doesn't bloom for him and the eagle doesn't cry in the mountains.

It does not relate to the EC, but if someone challenges the intelligence or charity of blue vs. red states, you might want to take a look at this:

MOST CHARITABLE STATES--RED OR BLUE?

 Red/Blue 2004/2000 map comparison

Bush Country (County-by-County Map)

 Ugly condescension of many liberals revealed at last

It's a new day. Libs need to live with it. (Bush won Iowa later).

 Democrats in Denial

  The height shows the vote differential between Kerry and Bush. Here's a scanned paper version:

Found from this thread.

 The 'hicks' bit back

 The tribe has spoken, now for goodness sake get a life

 Flashback 11/16/1992 - Clinton's "Mandate For Change" (So when does the MSM say this about GWB?)   We should thank the folks at Time Magazine, along with everyone else who wrote stupid articles like that back in 1992.
 BLUE=REPUBLICANS (think true blue Americans)
RED=COMMIES ER DEMOCRATS

AMERICA 2004:

59,209,925 votes for George W.Bush (51.07% of votes cast)
55,638,551 votes for John Kerry (47.99%)

AMERICA 1992

Bill Clinton: 44,909,806 votes (43.01% of votes cast)
George Bush41: 39,104,550 (37.45%)
H.Ross Perot: 19,743,821 (18.91%)
Looks to me that America had a mandate AGAINST Bill Clinton but couldn't agree on who to go with.

AMERICA 1996

Bill Clinton fared better here (spinning against his critics with blame for talk radio provoking the Oklahama City bombing, half of America didn't buy it):
Bill Clinton: 47,400,124 (49.23%)
Robert Dole: 39,198,755 (40.72%)
H.Ross Perot: 8,085,402 (8.40%)
