ALBANY - New York Republicans don't have a lot of time to bounce back from their drubbing at the polls last week: The race against Senator Clinton is just two years away.
Defeating the former first lady, or at least tarnishing her image, will be a priority for Republicans nationwide in 2006, given Mrs. Clinton's status as the Democrats' early front-runner for president in 2008.

I'm ready to take a "listening tour" of the state.
"He could win Suffolk County??? "
Good thinking. Perhaps Howard Mills has a brother.
All the better. He's an experienced carpet-bagger, not an amateur.
Pataki is the logical choice. He'll lose if he runs for Guv again against Spitzer and Bush doesn't want him in Washington.
While an understanding of the Constitution is not required, it is helpful. You have to be 30 to be a senator.
Who is the most famous and popular sports figure from New York? That would be a good consideration....look at JC Watts, Ahnold, the Minnesota wrestler, Steve largent, etc..
Popular sports all stars could win.
His base would be the anti-Hitlery people.
Yes, thanks... I did catch that from a later post. That's actually great news, because that really represents strong inroads. If the Republicans could increase their porportional share by that much again, they'd be able to win in '08. Do it twice more, and they'd be unstoppable!
Yes, the growth was probably due to 9/11, but the point is that there are now people to spread the conservative/moderate message in these regions. Believe me, many of these people are largely unaware that there are arguments besides the liberal ones. If they can hear a second point of view, many may change their minds.
Even simply repeating that growth once, even arithmatically, even over a few elections, could drastically alter the ground game in New York.
It's a sorry state when I have to consider governor gun control as a candidate.
Perhaps this is all moot as my wife and I are looking to move to a state where someone who shares our views has a shot at being elected.
It's possible as the Conservative party is endorsing and running their own candidates lately. But it splits the GOP vote.
Pataki is a Rockefeller Republican. He, along with Sheldon Silver and Joe Bruno have caused incredible damage to this state. New York's Medicaid benefits and their costs to counties may eventually force counties to just close down all services, including substantial portions of police and fire services.
In Erie County, ALL of the property tax for the county needs to be used to pay for the county's portion of their Medicaid costs. Pataki allowed the generous New York program to be implemented. His late attempt in 2003 to veto parts of the approved NYS budget was like putting one's finger in a dike about to burst.
He's also pro-choice, and can't give a straight answer in regards to gay marriage. I'll not vote for him for Senator, or President.
Giving an endorsement for a person running for office is vastly different than being the person who will be president for the next four years.
By your thinking, anyone who makes an endorsement for a candidate that wins would be a good candidate for president.
Rudy should do it. He'll never be president and it's time for him to step up.
On the other hand, maybe they can. They have a great record of running worthless candidates.
Also, I think both Giuliani and Pataki are smart enough to realize that they're going to have a lot of trouble getting the Republican nomination for president in 2008 and their best bet is to run statewide office in 2006.
I would rather see Rudy run for governor because there's a chance that Pataki (the only other electable Republican) could lose if he runs for a fourth term against a formidable opponent like Schumer. It's more important for the state to have a Republican governor than a Republican senator and Giuliani would win handily while Pataki would have a better chance of beating Hillary than Schumer.
Putting Rudy against Hillary, is like sending a poodle to do a pitbull's job.
Hannity would be great, but he won't run for office.
Giuliani could beat her, but he's very liberal socially (probably would draw a Conservative Party candidate in oposition) and may be in the Administration and therefore unavailable. Or he may be more interested in running for Governor.
Pataki might be able to beat her, although it's questionable, but he's no conservative either.
Pete King? One of the 5 Republicans to vote against Klintoon's impeachment? Don't think so.
Here are a couple of names that came into my head:
Jeanine Pirro, Westchester County DA. Tough prosecutor and one of the Scott Peterson analysts on Fox News. Pretty conservative, but likely moderate enough for New York.
Phil McConkey, former New York Giant. Conservative. Thought about running against Pataki, but backed off at the last minute.
Either could be a pretty good candidate, certainly better than Howard Mills.
How about Joe Holland? A black running against Hitlery might bring out the full measure of her vitriol and destroy her chances for 2008 even if she wins.
