A Message from the Commandant of the Marine Corps
Two hundred and twenty-nine years ago, the Second Continental Congress established a Corps of Marines to fight for a democratic people's independence. Since then countless Marines have raised their hand and sworn to defend our Nation's freedoms and preserve its liberties. This year's anniversary again finds Marines engaged throughout the globe for the same noble purposes. The bravery, heroism, and selflessness of all Marines - wherever they are serving - have added significantly to our rich legacy and measured up to the high standards that have come to epitomize all who wear the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.
The current battlefields of the Global War on Terror are linked to the storied campaigns of our past by an unbroken tradition of proud and loyal service. At New Providence, Chapultepec, Belleau Wood, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, the Chosin Reservoir, Con Thien, Kuwait, and now in places like Fallujah, Marines have consistently demonstrated a dedication to duty, a commitment to warfighting excellence, and a devotion to each other that has instilled a fierce determination to overcome seemingly impossible challenges. Our warrior ethos is and will continue to be the Corps' hallmark.
The fortitude and sacrifices of Marines and their families have been vital in protecting our Nation from those who would do us harm. Whether preparing and sustaining our agile force or engaged in battle, the esprit de corps, tireless energy, calm courage, and inspired leadership of Marines continue to make monumental difference in this world. Your unselfish dedication and significant accomplishments - demonstrated repeatedly over this past year in numerous places such as the Anbar province of Iraq, Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa, Haiti, and in the crucial job here at home supporting our deployed forces - are deeply respected and valued by your fellow Americans.
Marines, as we celebrate with friends and families the founding of our beloved Corps, you should take pride in our long history of distinguished service to this great Nation and its citizens. I ask you to remember especially the sacrifices of our fallen and wounded comrades. Finally, rededicate yourselves to taking care of one another and ensuring we remain the finest warfighting organization in the world.
Happy Birthday Marines, Semper Fidelis, and Keep Attacking!
M.W. Hagee General, U.S. Marine Corps

Marine Corps Birthday History
November 10, 1921: This date marked the first formal commemoration of the birthday of the Marine Corps as November 10, the date the Second Continental Congress resolved in 1775 to raise two battalions of Continental Marines. Prior to 1921, Marines recognized July 11 as their birthday, the date the Corps was reestablished by the Constitutional Republic in 1798.
In 1921, MajGen Commandant John A. Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47 summarizing the history, mission, and tradition of the Corps, and directed that it be read to every command each November 10. The Corps' birthday celebration has grown more elaborate over the years and has come to include a cake ceremony and formal ball.

Semper Fidelis
"Always Faithful," was adopted around 1883 as the motto of the Corps. Before that, the Corps had three traditional, but unofficial, mottoes:
- Fortitudine "With Fortitude"
- By Sea and By Land
- From the Halls of Montezuma,
to the Shores of Tripoli

Marine Corps Emblem and Seal
The present form of the Marine Corps emblem was adopted in 1955, one year after President Dwight D. Eisenhower approved the design of an official seal for the Corp. The emblem consists of a globe showing the Western Hemisphere intersected by a "foul anchor," an anchor that has one or more turns of the chain around it, surmounted by an American bald eagle with his wings displayed. The general design of the emblem was probably derived from the British Royal Marines' "Globe and Laurel."
The globe on the U.S. Marine emblem signifies service in any part of the world. The eagle, originally a crested eagle that can be found globally, also indirectly signifies service worldwide. The anchor indicates the amphibious nature of Marines' duties. The Marine Corps Seal includes the emblem in bronze. The American bald eagle holds in his beak a scroll bearing the Marine Corps motto Semper Fidelis. Displayed on a scarlet background, the seal is encircled with a navy blue band with a gold rope rim and is inscribed "Department of the Navy, United States Marine Corps."

The Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, VA was dedicated on this day in 1954
The statue depicts one of the most famous incidents of World War II, but it is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in the defense of the United States since 1775. To learn more about this special landmark, click here.

The Marines' Hymn
Every campaign the Marines have taken part in inspires an unofficial verse to be added to the hymn. The first verse of the official three-verse version is well known to Americans:
From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli, We fight our country's battles In the air, on land, and sea. First to fight for right and freedom, And to keep our honor clean, We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine.

FYI : Look in upper right corner of "My Comments" page.
Set it for "Brief" instead of Full.
You only will get title of thread and who pinged you.
No graphics will load.

For their birthday, the Marines are going to give instead of get (nothing unusual about that for any branch of service). They are given "W" an election present, Fallujah. :)

MARINE CORPS ORDERS
No. 47 (Series 1921)
HEADQUARTERS U.S. MARINE CORPS
Washington, November 1, 1921
The following will be read to the command on the 10th of November, 1921, and hereafter on the 10th of November of every year. Should the order not be received by the 10th of November, 1921, it will be read upon receipt.
(1) On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of Continental Congress. Since that date many thousand men have borne the name "Marine". In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.
(2) The record of our corps is one which will bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the world's history. During 90 of the 146 years of its existence the Marine Corps has been in action against the Nation's foes. From the Battle of Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war, and is the long eras of tranquillity at home, generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres and in every corner of the seven seas, that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security.
(3) In every battle and skirmish since the birth of our corps, Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term "Marine" has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue.
(4) This high name of destinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today have received from those who preceded us in the corps. With it we have also received from them the eternal spirit which has animated our corps from generation to generation and has been the distinguishing mark of the Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the men of our Nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men who have served as "Soldiers of the Sea" since the founding of the Corps.
JOHN A. LEJEUNE,
Major General Commandant

I can tell I'm getting old. . . . those boys look so young!
Especially the young man in his blues facing the camera. He looks about the same age as my youngest, who's 14 . . . and wants to join the Navy.
He'd be the first non-Army guy in our family since Uncle Henry Augustus who was with Dewey at Manila.
