Gov. Bush Says He's Really, Really Not Running For President

POSTED: 11:10 am EST November 9, 2004

Read his lips. Gov. Jeb Bush really, really isn't interested in succeeding his brother in the White House or running for the U.S. Senate in 2006.

Jeb BushHe's not kidding. So stop asking. At least until 2008.

Bush reiterated Tuesday that he's not going to run for the Senate when Florida has a seat up in '06, has no designs on the 2008 presidential race and he's getting tired of the question.

  So the natural follow-up question?

"Might you change your mind?" asked a reporter.

"No!" the exasperated governor responded as he entered a state Cabinet meeting Tuesday morning. "Why am I not believable on this subject? This is driving me nuts."

But before making that clear, he dodged a question on whether he might "eventually" run for president.

"Eventually, what's that?" Bush asked after a sigh and before launching into his oft-repeated pledge to finish his second four-year term as governor, which ends in January 2007.

"I'm not running for the United States Senate in 2006 and I'm not running for president in 2008."

He never got back to the question about "eventually."

Too bad. I like him even better than his brother and I really like his brother.

I'm surprised the media isn't still asking McCain if he'll run for VP with Kerry in '04.

If we lose in '08 you can bet he'll be drafted in 2012...

Jeb's problem is that if a Republican wins in 2008 he wouldn't be able to go in 2012 most likely.

I've said before he wouldn't run. He'd make a hell of a Pres though.

I wish he'd run for Senate against Bill Nelson, but that doesn't look likely.

Great news. We don't need a monarchy in this country.

I like him, but I'm glad. If this turned into another Bush Clinton election the whole thing would have too much of the wiff of a decadant Roman Republic with the Patrician families constantly vying for power. I don't want a monarchy or an empire.

He'd make a better senator than president. He's wonkish.

When will "P" be old enough to run?

You have to admit it's kind of perverse when people are averse to electing the best candidate we have (our best conservative governor) simply because of his family. A meritocracy-democracy would clamor for Jeb despite his family. Now we have a situation where anyone born in America can become president -- unless his family members have been president.

He has been good for Florida. He is an excellent administrator and appears to be apolitical in his decisions. He is a nuts and bolts governor whose accomplishments are too numerous to list here. As is the case with big brother, what you see is what you get.

I do think it would be fun to make some Bush '08 bumper stickers. Just to drive the left crazier....

George P. Bush in 2020, maybe.

The whole Mexican American population will rally behind him.

But Jebb?

Nooooooh

and Carl Rove running his campaign?

Nohoohohooh

Anything is possible.

If W is popular at the end of his term and his agenda is accepted, the possiblities for Jebb may be there!
