In Madison, Wis., a pharmacist faces possible disciplinary action by the state pharmacy board for refusing to transfer a woman's prescription for birth-control pills to another druggist or to give the slip back to her. He would not refill it because of his religious views.

Consider this pharmacist's choices when he had the woman's prescription in his hands. Obviously, if he gave it back to her, she'd just have it filled somewhere else. Now they're punishing him for not giving it back to her!

Uh, no offense, but IT'S HER PROPERTY, not his.

What is your point? That he has a right to decide whether or not this woman may or may not use birth control? It wasn't his prescription. If he doesn't want to fill it, what right does he have to keep it? Bizarre.

But he has to give it back to her. He can refuse to fill the script, but he cannot refuse her the right to go elsewhere to have it filled. These are birth control pills.

As they should. His job isn't to legislate his version of morality - it's to dispense pharmaceuticals.

He should be fired.

He should find another line of work. It's not up to the employee to determine the morality of a prescription. Without the pill, the demand for surgical abortion will skyrocket. I don't think that pro life or pro choice Americans want to see that happen. Pharmacists and doctors refusing to give or fill needed prescriptions is a trend that needs to stop immediately.

What business is that if his?

Now they're punishing him for not giving it back to her!

Um, he stole her property...

As well they should. It is a legal product and she has a prescription for it.

If he personally doesn't want to fill the prescription he can give it back to her and she can take it to someone who will. Just when did he suddenly acquire the right to steal her property? When did he acquire the right to make moral judgements for her?

Sounds like you need to open a pharmacy so you can employ this idiot.

Of course he's in trouble. The prescription wasn't his to keep.

And if he didn't give it back, she'd just go back to the doctor and get another, so he should have stolen her car, and perhaps shot her in the kneecaps.

As they should. She paid for the prescription. His keeping it is theft.

You're going to get flamed for that. A lot of people here can't detect obvious sarcasrm.

Here is a religious belief analogy for you.

Should a jewish person who works at McDonalds be allowed to refuse to sell cheeseburgers because they don't believe in mixing dairy with beef?
