Using County-by-County election return data from USA Today together with County boundary data from the US Census' Tiger database we produced the following graphic depicting the results. Of course, blue is for the democrats, red is for the republicans, and green is for all other. Each county's color is a mix of these three color components in proportion to the results for that county.
Counties shown in black represent either missing election data or a mismatch between the US Census data and the USA Today data. For example, the New England states' election return data is given for each municipality and/or district rather than for each county. Hence, it couldn't be easily matched with the county boundaries.

It still looks pretty red to me.
Just damn.
If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
Plenty red to me too.
They're doing their darndest to try to make it look bluer.
Ain't workin'.
And a poor one at that. I notice that in the legend, the "blue" extends far closer to the halfway point (indeed, almost right up to it) than the "red".
ROFL - let the fools continue to delude themselves and keep losing elections.
It looks good to me...turns many blue areas purple like Miami-Dade....
you could see that first red/blue map was driving whining liberals insane. This map is intended to feed their delusional view of America and quench their tears.
That was my first thought...
Remember the movie, 'Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid'? Remember when Butch (Paul Newman) thought he had a great idea and he would tell Sundance? Sundance would say to Butch with a laugh in his voice, "You just keep thinkin', Butch, that's what you're good at!"
Princeton, you just keep thinkin' America is purple that's what you're good at!
Wow...they are really reaching now.
Its still red you ivy league wimps.
Unfortunately for the in-denial leftists, this make American look even more conservative. There are no real blue areas left of any consequence. Everyone is red or becoming red!
Red and blue, will, if you mix them in ANY proportion, be purple of one hue or another. Therefore, no election results will seem "significant". So it is categorically impossible for any Republican mandate to ever be seen.
The color scheme is wonderful -- unless, of course, the Democrats were to seize the majority of US counties, in which case this whole "purple" thing would be instantly dropped.
Years ago the Republicans were always, always portrayed as BLUE on national election maps and the Democrats were always portrayed as red.
In fact, several networks still had the Republicans as blue and Dems red during the 2000 election.
Somewhere between 2000 and 2004 the networks got together and decided that red is more harsh and would likely turn the public off to Democrats.
Not to mention that red stands for being communist, which the Dems can surely relate.
Seriously, I think this switch was made by network lib anchors who will do anything they can to try and put a better light on Democrats.
Red/Blue is a poor choice of colors for this type of presentation. Better to make it Black/White or Yellow/Green. The purple color is very hard for an eye to discern differences in value.
Let's NOT see the R/D ratio of counties displayed as a range between red/blue but each county as ONLY red or blue, depending on who got the MAJRITY of votes there.....
The bigger version looks even better.
