a cuckoo clock comes to mind.

Projection. It's the hardest thing for those plagued with minds infested with liberal thought.

And check out Thomas Sowell's column today on Specter. It is devastating.

---SOWELL EXCERPT---

The key turning point was the nomination of Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court in 1987 and the massive smear campaign against him. No nominee to the Supreme Court was ever more qualified than Judge Bork but Senator Specter voted against him.

At one crucial point, Senator Pat Leahy took a cheap shot at Judge Bork by saying that he had earned large consulting fees in some years, when he was a law professor, as if that were something dishonorable. What was not revealed to the public was that those were years in which Professor Bork's wife was fatally ill and he needed that money to do all that he could for her.

Judge Bork was obviously deeply distressed by having that painful period in his personal life dragged into the political arena and his actions in those years twisted and distorted beyond recognition. When Judge Bork rested his head in his hands and covered his eyes, Judiciary Committee chairman Joseph Biden -- to his credit -- called a recess.

But, when it was proposed to end the hearings for the day, Senator Arlen Specter refused to agree. He wasn't prepared to wait to get his shots in against Judge Bork. Senator Specter's agenda was more important to him than common decency.

As the hearings went on, it became clear that Senator Specter's agenda was also more important to him than the Constitution's separation of powers, for the Senator was clearly judging Judge Bork not on his high qualifications but on whether or not he was likely to uphold policies that Senator Specter liked.

He demanded to know "where's the predictability in Judge Bork." He asked: "Where's the assurances for this committee and the Senate of where you'll be?"

Judges in general, and Justices of the Supreme court in particular, are supposed to be impartial and independent in judging the specific merits of whatever cases arise -- not predictable. What does the separation of powers mean if one branch of government can prescribe in advance what members of another branch of government must do on specific issues?

"Of course, we'll fail because driving Specter, Snow and the rest of the liberal Republicans to "do a Jeffers" will condemn us to another Souter.

We just won an election -- I pray to God that we don't blow our feet off!"

Nevermind blowing "feet" off....

Some of you are preemptively blowing your own balls off.

Stand up, man! You've got Arlen Specter dictating to me and you, the President, 54 other GOP Senators, and 59,000,000 people mere hours after the election.

Do yourself a favor and tear down the Neville Chamberlain poster, ok?

Sometimes the stupidly about tactics around here astounds me, and when it comes to judicial nominees, I am as hard right as the next Freeper, hard as that may be to believe.

Exactly. I've challenged all of the zealots for four straight days to give me a game plan for getting to 60 votes on judicial confirmations without the support of Specter, Snowe, Collins, McCain etc.

I'm still waiting for the game plan from these people. They have none.

They'd rather have their spite than their judges confirmed.

Specter has been considerably weakened by conservatives voicing their opinions. He is on record as saying he will get all of Bushs appointees a vote. We should declare victory and move on.

"That there are even any Republicans willing to tolerate and defend the vile anti-Christian and anti-Catholic bigotry of such a loathsome smarmy degenerate creep like Specter should raise a few eyebrows among any sincere conservatives interested in what really goes on in the temples of power in Washington."

If there IS such a thing as 'French' Freepers and Pubbies, these are the people who not only wave the white flag, but refuse to charge the light brigade in the name of principle even when the GOP is loaded for bear.

Yep, as for "moderates" in Washington and at FR, they've got an agenda all their own.

The days when liberal Republicans had clout are over. In fact, their power has been slowly withering since Nelson Rockefeller was defeated by Barry Goldwater during the 1964 Republican primaries.

RINO backstabbers need to be reminded periodically that they will have to pay a price for their nasty behavior, and getting Specter dumped would be the strongest message we could send. There are just too many of us still around who will NEVER forget how Judge Bork was treated.

My dear departed grandmother used to say: "What goes over the horses back will come back under his belly."

I am not only fine with that, I hope that conservatives will continue to keep the heat on Frist. Since Frist is running for President, we should raise expectations of how he and Specter are gonna deliver on judges... and raise the ante if we have to, from time to time.

The days when liberal Republicans had clout are over.

Really? Let's say Specter were booted from the chairmanship. You don't think Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Lincoln Chafee, and John McCain might decide to take it out on some of these nominees?

They've got plenty of clout. And I don't want to return to the days when Dick Cheney had to vote to get ordinary bills through the Senate.

Specter has been chastened, and has gotten the message. He says he will send all nominees forward to get a full vote in the Senate.

Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Lincoln Chafee, and John McCain are a pitifully small army. They can see the handwriting on the wall.

We're talking about the category of people with no scruples, no principles, no fear of God, even. They can be counted on to keep their word?

Spector is a done deal. There never was a chance to keep Spector from being chair because the Senate would never junk seniority regardless of who controls the Senate. End of a story that never was. Here's an area where each party is just as bad as the other.

This is an interesting debate and I fall on the "dump Arlen" side of this argument. We've spent the better part of the past year claiming that Kerry had a voting record that demonstrated conclusively who he IS; so does Arlen. He has demonstrated time and time again that he is about himself and his own political philosophies and will do whatever is politically expedient to achieve his aims - personal and political. Furthermore, he has clearly been caught off guard by the reaction to his "caution" to the President (indicative of his sense of loyalty after W pulled his nuts out of the fire last Spring) and will do or say anything to ensure his ascendancy to the chairmanship of the Judiciary. His temporary repentance - and it is temporary - will disappear as soon as he has the chairmanship.

As to his ability to bring the other RINOs into line, hasn't he had the opportunity to do so for the last four years? With Arlen as a member of the Juciciary and Orrin Hatch as Chairman, our record of getting the President's judges through the confirmation process hasn't exactly been spectacular; how many vacancies are there on the federal bench? Arlen and others could have invoked strict fillibuster procedures to force the Dems' hand, but weren't willing to do so; in fact, he argued against it.

Specter hasn't displayed a great deal of leadership in the last four years and, again based on his record, there is no reason to believe he will do so. Far too many times since 1994, the party has proved that it can accomplish some things for the sake of political expediency and without ruffling too many feathers. But, as I've maintained since 1994, the party has proved it can win and has done so again, but it has yet to prove that it can LEAD.

They don't call him "Snarlin' Arlen" for nothing...

Oftentimes, the spelling and grammar astounds me! :^)

Seriously, though, I think you may be right if Specter actually goes down on this one. However, I don't think he will. I think he will survive to chair the committee but will have "his sinuses cleared" regarding this battle. His focus will be on proving that he is a good soldier.
