NEAR FALLUJAH, Iraq - More than 4,000 U.S. Marines and Army troops punched their way into northeastern Fallujah on Monday, kicking off a massive assault dubbed Operation Phantom Fury that seeks to put an end to half a year of insurgent control of the Sunni Muslim city.

The prelude to the assault on the Askari neighborhood was a crushing air and artillery bombardment of the city that rose to a crescendo by Monday evening, with U.S. strike jets dropping bombs around the clock and big guns pounding the city every few minutes with high-explosive shells.

Meanwhile, insurgents in Baghdad and nearby Ramadi tried to keep up the pressure on the coalition forces with new attacks, including one on a Catholic church in the capital.

Earlier Monday U.S. troops had fought their way into the city's western outskirts, seizing two bridges over the Euphrates River and helping Iraqi soldiers take the city's main hospital in the first stage of a major assault on the insurgent stronghold.

It will be great when these embedded reporters become the next generation of media. They will have a far different perspective of the US military and her objectives than the current crop of liberal America hating anchors and reporters..

There is another soldier inside, shooting from behind the wall, he's hidden by the standing soldier but becomes visible once the standing soldier moves back inside the house.

In the restive Sunni Muslim city of Ramadi,....... Near the city of Samarra north of Baghdad, US and Iraqi forces searched for suspects for a second day in the restive city amid reports of intermittent clashes there.

Would you say right in the same vicinity.

Have they changed the name of this operation? What is "New Dawn" that I just heard Miles O talking about on CNN?

I believe a C-130 is a cargo plane...

I do believe that he meant an AC-130 - one of the most vicious prop planes in the AF arsenal.

Look up the tests they did years ago involving shooting goats and such. They disproved a lot of myths about the .223 being more lethal. I would attribute our lopsided kills in Somalia to a target rich environment and the fact that OUR people are trained to shoot and most of the terrorists can't hit the broadside of a barn. That and the AR type weapons are more accurate generally.

*smile* I love that speech. I gave out copies of it to two of my students in NJ back at the beginning of the Iraqi war because they were signing up for the Marines as soon as they graduated (they were seniors) and I hope they took it with them. There is a tradition on St. Crispin's Day I understand that only those who were in battle can recite it (according to a friend of ours retired military)

What does "went to ground" mean?

They probably meant under ground jerri.

Ir the author of that article is working as fast as this thread is moving, I can understand their mistakes. LOL

Talking about how military is changing, how Bush asked him to reform it before 9/11. How it is more stealth, lighter.
