Man who killed self at Ground Zero upset about election, girlfriend

BY MAKI BECKER AND ADAM LISBERG

New York Daily News

ATHENS, Ga. - (KRT) - The Georgia man who killed himself at Ground Zero was upset about President Bush's re-election - but his biggest problem may have been his double life, a source told the New York Daily News on Sunday.

Andrew Veal, 25, was engaged to be married to an Iowa college student, whom he was supposed to see at her sister's wedding in Seattle this weekend. But Veal also had a girlfriend in Athens, Ga., where he lived, sources said.

When cops found his body in lower Manhattan's hallowed ground Saturday morning, they found a note to his girlfriend saying she was "too good" for him, a source said. The note also included a reference to Bush's victory, the source said.

Friends and co-workers said they never had a clue Veal was suicidal.

"I think he wanted it to be dramatic," said one 23-year-old Athens friend. "The election was just a catalyst."

Veal was a peaceful, liberal vegetarian who hated guns, never got worked up about politics or Sept. 11 and seemed content, friends said.

"He doesn't even have friends who have guns," said Mary Anne Mauney, Veal's boss at a University of Georgia survey research lab. "We're all trying to understand, and nobody does."

Veal and his roommates held an Election Night party in their clapboard house near the University of Georgia campus, where they expected to celebrate a John Kerry victory.

But the day after Bush won, Veal bought a shotgun in an Athens store and drove to New York, a source said, where he went on a spending spree with his girlfriend's credit card.

While his mom and his fiancee tried desperately to reach him by phone, he called an Athens restaurant where he worked part time and said he was in New York on Thursday.

He was found Saturday morning when a worker at the Millenium Hotel across Church St. from Ground Zero saw him lying on a concrete structure inside the gated and guarded perimeter.

Police from the Port Authority, which controls the 16-acre site, found Veal's car nearby and are reconstructing his movements, spokesman Steve Coleman said.

Among their concerns: How did a shotgun-toting man slip unnoticed into the guarded area - a solemn tourist destination that is also a major rail hub with entrances to Hudson River PATH tunnels?

Port Authority cops and private security guards watch the site, and Coleman would not say if surveillance cameras caught Veal's movements. He asked anyone who may have seen anything unusual Friday night to contact PA police.

Mauney said Veal's mother was in a "terrible" condition after learning of her son's death, and his friends could not fathom why he chose to end it all at Ground Zero.

"He was just an incredibly wonderful person - sensitive, passionate, caring and kind. I'll miss him very much," Mauney said. "As to the whys or hows, nobody knows."

The timing of this is suspicious. Karl Rove had better have and alibi.

Nor I, but I'd swear I've seen comments. Ok, I admit it, I was hoping to be convinced otherwise. ;-)

I'll probably be pulled for this or considered a troll, but I'm actually willing to listen. If everyone wants to insult me, so be it, but it's sincere. I'm a liberal, and I know you guys don't like that.

I feel that I was lied to about this war. I feel that UBL hated Saddam (yes, I am familiar with the fact that both were mass murderers). And I think this war was a victory for UBL, because it distracted from the WOT.

Give me links to websites if you need to; just tell me why my country has not lost its mind. I'll probably still disagree, and that's OK. I just don't want to think we've gone mad. I usually go on left-wing sites, so maybe there's something I don't know.

All the murderous freaks are in Iraq now getting their asses kicked instead of blowing up more of our stuff here.

'nuff said.

Fair enough. The link below is "links to everything I think we need to know about." Including links that may answer your questions. Go to "last" and work backwards.

Can you imagine how happy his potential in-laws are? They are saved from having a liberal vegetarian at the Thanksgiving table for the rest of their lives.

The suicide victim, Andrew Veal, was discovered on a concrete slab in the construction pit near the Church Street subway entrance Saturday morning. A bottle of Jack Daniel's was by his side, and a 12-gauge shotgun lay across his body. Authorities believe that Veal, who was engaged to be married, killed himself sometime Friday — his birthday, friends said.

Law-enforcement officials and friends said Veal, a project coordinator at the University of Georgia Research Center who also did political polling, had been depressed over the outcome of the election.

Friends also said he may have killed himself to protest the war in Iraq.

Selfish and arrogant with other people's money to the very end: the perfect Democrat.

I feel that I was lied to about this war. I feel that UBL hated Saddam

A good starting point on the road to truth about the Saddam/UBL connection would be the November 6, 1998 US Grand Jury Indictment of Usama bin Laden. The following is a direct quote from the 4th count of the indictment:

"al Qaeda reached an understanding with the government of Iraq that al Qaeda would not work against that government and that on particular projects, specifically including weapons development, al Qaeda would work cooperatively with the Government of Iraq."

Also enlightening is this ABC News report from 1999 (audio link).

The case for war does not depend upon proving Saddam Hussein orchestrated the 911 attacks. This was a rogue dictator, renegging on the terms of his 1991 surrender, in violation of 17 UN Resolutions, firing on US planes in the no-fly zone for a decade, harboring terrorists and financing terrorists while committing genocide against his own people. And yes, he had one of the most agressive WMD programs in the world (look at how much he spent on it, not at how much finished product we were able to find).

The lesson of 9/11 is, states who support terror will be held responsible for terror. The Taliban and Saddam were just the first two in line.

I have a tale of liberal exploitation of 9/11. I live in an unincorporated small town in LA. We have a select group of lefty elitist liberals who wanted to incorporate our town to; 1. create a mayor/city council type municipal government. 2. Create a oneman (horse) police department, 3. enact liberal city ordinances for power control, 4. raise taxes when there is no revenue to fill the coffers. 5. All of these meatheads came from up north and wanted things here to become like their former habitats. Myself and a group of loyal followers had petitions circulated and signed by 15% of the residents in our area which was brought before the county commission for a vote to create our own district to stop this incorporation nonsense. When the commission met shortly after 9/11 we presented our case in a professional and substantiated manner. The opposing group elist liberals stated the following;1. the reason 9/11 happened was because of people like us not pulling together and disagreeing with them to incorporate our town. 2. Our actions were that of the KKK and would divide the community(put up an imaginary berlin wall) 3.One lackey said the next thing is, we would require all people not in our district to wear arm-bands to identify them as non-residents of our district, 4. and the liberal leader's wife jumped up and shouted at the top of her lungs, that at a time of duress in this country we should all be pulling together instead of apart. Well after all the hysterical whining the commissioned voted on our petition to create a new district. The vote passed by a margin of 4 to 3 and I quickly turned in the petitions immediately to the secretary of the county commissioners to insure it was annotated as received at the time of the vote passage. Well, we won and I laughed so hard at the hysteical liberals ranting about, if klintoon were in office janet reno would come down and straighten out this outrage of injustice. I smiled at them and said this is America land of the free and home of the brave. I further told them that we unlike them pulled together and not apart to stop their power grab of our little community. I hope that I did not bore you with this story, but I just wanted to show my example of the liberal mind-set in my part of the country.P.S. our county government provides us with superior police services and many other amenities without the burden of another layer of government/more taxes. Our referendum, when the vote took place was overwhelming in our favor by a vote 600+ to a mere 40-. In closing even after Ivan things here in Lillian,LA are looking good. 9/11 only made America stronger.

Great post......Unbelievable......40 snotty libs, are they Yankees?, trying to take over a town of 600 +.....

Well, that vote must have surely told them to go crawl back under the rock they came out from...hahahaha! Just make sure they don't take over your local school system or you'll find your children brainwashed with their viewpoint.

Great job, good luck and keep up the fight for freedom.

...where he went on a spending spree with his girlfriend's credit card.

That's the part I didn't get. If you're figuring on checking out, then why not run up your own credit card? That is, unless you didn't have one, or the ones you had were maxxed out. Or was it an overt act of aggression vs the girlfriend?

He was "incredibly wonderful..." in the manner in which he duped his fiancee, duped his slut-on-the-side, duped his mother, and for a guy who hated guns and loved his peas, he didn't choose to die via a hunger strike, no, no, he bought a GUN!!!!!!!!! Suddenly, the entire world feels lighter and fresher, as though a huge moronic weight has been lifted from massive crags!!!!!

This credit card thing has me baffled as well. What the hell do you buy when you are intending to kill yourself? He already had the gun and car. Maybe he bought the Jack Daniels. He probably charged and had presents delivered to the other girl on the girlfriend's credit card.
