URGENT ALERT Stop Specter! (Condensed 1-page flyer for distribution)

Emergency Communiqué to all Brother Knights and Pro-Life friends:

Print Friendly

First I want to say thanks and God bless each of you who helped get out the Vote on Nov 2. But now the Pro-Life advances we have made are in great peril. Your immediate assistance is needed and will take just a few minutes of your time. We can stop this disaster from crippling the future prospects of ending the Holocaust of abortion—but only if enough of us participate.

Senator Arlen Specter is in line to become the next chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Specter is an avid promoter of abortion and has a litmus test to block all Conservative Pro-Life nominees to the Supreme Court. He was instrumental in blocking President Reagan's nomination of justice Robert Bork and there is every reason to believe that he will block all conservative Pro-Life nominees that President Bush will send to the Senate for confirmation. It is possible that President Bush will make three or four appointments to the Supreme Court in the next 4 years. If Specter forces Bush to nominate "compromise" justices for confirmation and they turn out to be pro-abortion, Roe will remain in place for several more decades.

Four things each of us can do to help stop Specter from becoming the next Judiciary Chairman:

1. Go on line and sign the three petitions at these Web addresses:
http://www.gopusa.com/activist/petitions/petition.php?petition=specter_chairman
http://www.afa.net/petitions/signpetition.asp?id=1290
http://www.notspecter.com/petition1.php

2. If one or both of the U.S. senators who will represent your state in the new Congress is a Republican, contact his or her office immediately with this message: "Senator Specter must not become chairman of the Judiciary Committee. We urge Senator ______ to support any other Republican member of the Judiciary Committee to become chairman -- anyone but Arlen Specter." The offices of continuing senators can be contacted by telephone through the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121, and appropriate e-mail messages can be sent to them via the National Right to Life Legislative Action Center at http://www.capwiz.com/nrlc/home/ Please use both phone AND e-mail. Contact information for the seven newly elected Republican senators will be at http://www.capwiz.com/nrlc/home/ as soon as it becomes available.

3. Call the office of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tn.) at 202-224-3344, with a message along these lines: "Senator Arlen Specter MUST NOT become chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He would use that position to protect Roe v. Wade and to advance abortion and human cloning. We urge you to do everything in your power to ensure that a pro-life member becomes chairman, NOT Specter." You can also send Sen. Frist a Fax: 202-228-1264, and e-mail at http://www.capwiz.com/nrlc/mail/?id=540&type=CO&state=TN

4. Forward this message to everyone in your e-mail lists, make copies and distribute at any meetings you may be attending. Encourage everyone to participate. Distribute copies to your friends, co-workers, and relatives. Ask your pastor for permission to distribute this at Church. AND PRAY.

For more details, go to www.KnightsForLife.org

There were tens of millions of “Values Voters” who voted in defense of the sanctity of life on Nov. 2. If each of us will now take the time to engage in this simple act of civic responsibility we can be an incredible force for good.

United—as one—we can change the world.

Many people these days don't like to read very much. But we need to try to get the word out to them. I've condensed this down to a 1-page document that outlines the 4 critical action items we want people to engage in.

Here is something else to consider. In the 1992 Supreme Court case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the Supreme Court had an opportunity to overturn Roe v. Wade. Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Associate Justices Byron White, Anthony Scalia, and Clarence Thomas voted to do so.

Those who voted to uphold Roe v. Wade included Associate Justices John Paul Stevens, Sandra Day O’Connor, David Souter, and Harry Blackmun. It was Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy who would cast the deciding vote in the case. Kennedy was initially going to vote to overturn Roe v. Wade but ultimately caved in to pressure from pro-abortion groups and voted to uphold it.

Kennedy should never have been a judge in the case. He was appointed to the Supreme Court only after the man nominated before him, Judge Douglas Ginsburg, was voted down by the Senate after admitting he had smoked marijuana in the past. And Ginsburg was only nominated because the man nominated before him was none other than Robert Bork, whose fate we already know. If not for Arlen Specter, it would have been Bork, not Kennedy, casting that deciding vote.

Thanks to Arlen Specter, one golden opportunity to overturn the atrocity that is Roe v. Wade has already been squandered. Can we really afford to put him in a position to do it again?

Remember: those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.

With 45 million babies dead and counting, perhaps it is time we informed Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of the folly of giving Specter the power to replace Tom Daschle as obstructionist-in-chief.

Recall that alleged Republican Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, upon winning the primary,

immediately backstabbed President Bush, who had campaigned for him instead of actual

Republican Pat Toomey. Turns out Specter was just getting started.

We now see that the usually pro-Democrat Pittsburgh Post-Gazette endorsed the sharp-horned

RINO in Tuesday's general election for this reason: "Before the Post-Gazette editorial

board, he promised that no extremists would be approved for the bench."

What the pro-abortion Specter and pro-abortion Post-Gazette mean by "extremist" is anyone

who isn't pro-abortion or who otherwise follows the U.S. Constitution instead of making up

legislation from the bench.

"Even if he votes nine out of 10 times for the administration, we trust his word that the 10

percent of difference will be a brake on the worst excesses of a second Bush term, if it

comes to that," the pee-yoo P-G snarled.

And there are these facts:

Arlen Specter:

Voted NO on ending special funding for minority & women-owned business. (Oct 1997)

Voted NO on banning affirmative action hiring with federal funds. (Jul 1995)

Success is near because of all the hard work we have done, but it is not yet over. The

Philadelphia Inquirer, Washington Times, and United Press International all covered how the

offices have been flooded with calls, but we need to keep it up as the fight does not end

here! Make the calls all over again on Monday.

Also note the changes to the site, all the recent press mentions will be on the Why? page,

but this blog should keep you fairly up to date on the goings ons.

Keep Up The Work

Things are going fantastic over here, as we have gotten press through the Laura Ingram Show,

several state pro-life alerts, and countless conservative e-mail lists, but the fight has

just begun.

The rumor on the Hill is that things are about ready to break. We just need to keep up

pressure on them to make sure it happens. So keep your eyes and ears open. NotSpecter.com

also has some great resources that have gone up so make sure to check it out.

Also GrassrootsPA.com has a letter written by Specter to raise money that slams the

conservative wing of the party, which puts to rest any argument over how he would run the

Judiciary Committee.

I would LIKE to distribute this in my church this evening. But I'm worried how it would be received in an ultra-conservative, Protestant Dutch Reformed congregation. Advice?

Absolutely.

IIRC--Freepers have posted much on what would have been if not for specter the terrible.

The Pennsylvania Treason really hit home on Dubya and Santorum. Toomey would be in -- but they put politics before principle and now have this AND US as the result.

Please listen to this Audioclip.

Very informative talk about how powerful the Chairman’s position is and how incredibly committed Specter is to defending Roe v Wade AND the escalation of the holocaust. Please listen then pass on to everyone.

If you could create a generic Christian version that either leaves out the specific "Knights" references or parallels it with some nondenominational anti-abortion/pro-life ones, that would be helpful in reaching a broader spectrum without provoking "Protestant vs. Catholic" issues.

Looks like the people in our church are already on this! This is a good sign. Look what I just got in private e-mail from one of our parishoners:

Since both of our Senators are Democrats (who have no vote on this
matter) it will do no good to contact them. So, please go to
NotSpecter.com and sign the petition.
Movement Arises to Block Specter
Citizens angered by stance on judges rapidly mobilize
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=41331

Controversial remarks by Sen. Arlen Specter, cautioning President Bush
against nominating Supreme Court justices who would overturn the Roe vs.
Wade abortion decision, have sparked a furious outcry from Bush's large
conservative and Evangelical support base, and spawned a movement to
ensure the Pennsylvania Republican does not ascend to chairmanship of the
Senate Judiciary Committee as expected.
Overnight, a website named emerged to help lead the charge.
Organized as a project of RedState.org, the website "is dedicated to the
proposition that the Republican party, the conservative movement and the
country would all be better served without Arlen Specter as chairman of
the Senate Judiciary Committee. For decades, Specter has shown that his
personal interests and the president's agenda are at odds."
The site has a petition that will be forwarded to the judiciary panel and
offers other ways to contact influential officials in Washington.
Recently re-elected to a fifth term with the crucial aid of President
Bush, Specter is in line to become chairman in January when Sen. Orrin
Hatch of Utah steps down due to term-limit rules.
According to an Associated Press interview Wednesday, Specter said, "When
you talk about judges who would change the right of a woman to choose,
overturn Roe vs. Wade, I think that is unlikely. The president is well
aware of what happened, when a number of his nominees were sent up, with
the filibuster. ... And I would expect the president to be mindful of the
considerations which I am mentioning."
After an immediate outburst of national outrage, Specter issued a
statement Thursday insisting he did not send a warning to Bush.
"I did not warn the president about anything and was very respectful of
his constitutional authority on the appointment of federal judges,"
Specter said. "I have never and would never apply any litmus test on the
abortion issue."
Nevertheless, outraged Iowa state Rep. Dan Boddicker has launched a drive
to make Sen. Charles Grassley chairman of the panel instead. But the Iowa
Republican senator, an abortion opponent, is expected to resume his
chairmanship of the Senate Finance Committee.
According to rules established by the majority party, the committee
chairman will be chosen by a secret-ballot vote of the Republican members
of the panel. The nod traditionally goes to the senior member, but the
rules specify any member can be selected. The entire conference must then
approve the committee's pick by another secret ballot, although rejection
is rare.
Specter, who says he joined the GOP in his first election race in 1965
because it offered more support than the Democrats, has a lifetime rating
of 43 out of 100 from the American Conservative Union. By comparison, his
Pennsylvania Republican colleague Sen. Rick Santorum has a rating of 87.
But Santorum has come to Specter's defense, while seeking assurance he
will abide by the president's wishes.
After Specter's follow-up statement Thursday, Santorum said Specter had
"clarified that he does not support a litmus test for nominees with
regard to their stance on abortion" and added he looked forward "to
working with Sen. Specter to guarantee that every judicial nominee put
forth by President Bush has an up-or-down vote" by the full Senate.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, told the AP he hoped Specter would promise to
back the president's nominees.
"I'm intending to sit down and discuss with him how things are going to
work," he said. "We want to know what he's going to do and how things are
going to work."
Vigorous Campaign
Syndicated radio talk host Laura Ingraham, urging "Stop Specter Now," is
waging a vigorous campaign to get listeners to put pressure on Senate
Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has shown interest in becoming the
Republican presidential nominee in 2008.
Ingraham is among many asking citizens to call Frist's office at (202)
224-3344 and contact members of the judiciary committee.
A group called Grassroots PA points out Specter wrote a letter in 1995 to
supporters that slammed the "far-right fringe" of the Republican Party.
The group pulled out quotes from Specter's letter:
"I want to strip the strident anti-choice language" from the GOP party
plank.
"I will not give up our Party to radical extremists without a fight."
"Will you stand up to the far-right fringe that demands that legal
abortion be banned?"
"I don't think the Republican Party should be blackmailed by any special
interest group."
James Dobson, head of Focus on the Family, called Specter's comments this
week "the worst kind of political bullying."
The Family Research Council noted Spector led the fight against President
Reagan's nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, Robert Bork.
"He has a history of pandering to the aggressive abortion lobby and a
Specter chairmanship would be disastrous," the FRC said in a statement.
As chairman, the FRC pointed out, "he would control the confirmation
process of federal judges, including nominees to the Supreme Court. He
would also determine the makeup of the Senate Judiciary Committee staff,
which would go a long way toward determining the committee's political
and judicial philosophy."
Concerned Women for America sent a letter yesterday to Frist, urging the
majority leader to "use your considerable influence to prevent Sen.
Specter from being placed in a position of trust to which he is clearly
not suited."
CWA referred to the conventional wisdom that Specter would not have
narrowly defeated popular conservative challenger Rep. Pat Toomey in the
Republican primary without the support of President Bush.
"Some pay-back," CWA said. "Specter earned no mandate to tell the
president that he did not earn 'a mandate' in his election victory."
CWA added, "Given the president's resounding victory by both popular and
the Electoral College vote, and the Republicans' increased margin in the
Senate to 55 seats, filibusters should be out of the question to consider
and easy to defeat. This makes it all the more traitorous for Specter to
give aid and comfort to those who've opposed the presidents judicial
nominees."
A coalition of pro-life groups plans a "pray-in" outside the Dirksen
Senate Office building Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. to help ensure Specter does
not get the panel chairmanship.
The coalition, which says it hopes also to pray inside Frist's office,
includes Troy Newman of Operation Rescue, Rev. Pat Mahoney of the
Christian Defense Coalition, Rev. Rob Schenck of Faith and Action, and
Chris Slattery, a pro-life, pro-family activist from New York City.
"We urge people to contact Senator Frist and let him know that the
president needs a loyal man at the helm of the Judiciary Committee, and
that man is not Senator Spector, "said Mahoney.
"Specter's attempt to challenge the right of the president to make
judicial appointments is outrageous," said Newman. "He cannot be allowed
to single-handedly hold nominees hostage with whom he has a personal ax
to grind."

One of the great political ironies is that PA has a "low" abortion rate and a low divorce rate compared to other large states, but it is PA voters who insist on Arlen Specter in the Senate who also do as much as anyone to promote the "woman's right to choose."

Who knows: if Frist "borks" Specter, Frist could win the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 as easily as JFK II took the Democrat nod in 2004. If Frist lets Specter chair and obstruct, as I am convinced that he will, he will go no where in the nomination struggle, a la Jack Kemp (1988).

Senators are rarely Presidential material. They are club-women. Men without chests. Or viscera. Frist will do the right thing only if the Right engages him.

Awesome Lex!

I have heard that more than a few Churches across the nation are getting involved, and that is what is needed here. These senators are very stubborn and need much force to persuade them.
