WASHINGTON The Navy dismissed a broadcast report Friday that American forces in Iraq have recovered human remains believed to be those of missing Navy pilot Scott Speicher.
Theres nothing to substantiate the story, and weve communicated that to the Speicher family, said Cdr. Conrad Chun, a Navy spokesman.
First Coast News, which serves a pair of Jacksonville, Fla., television stations, reported that remains thought to be Speichers had been recovered in an undisclosed location in Iraq and were being tested to verify their identity. The report also was broadcast on Hampton Roads television Friday evening.
Speicher has been missing since the first night of the 1991 Persian Gulf War, when his F/A-18 Hornet was down over southern Iraq. Speicher, who was flying off the Jacksonville-based Saratoga, was originally declared killed, but Navy officials changed his status to missing and presumed captured after recovered pieces of his plane indicated that he might have ejected safely.
Neither the Speicher family nor their attorney returned calls Friday.

God Bless this man and his family.
Good grief! Not again. Somebody needs to take firm command of this investigation and search. The press is NOT the place for this investigation. This family has been thru too much.
PING
Isn't this terrible. Every day I hate the Press even more, and hate is a very bad word.
Prayers for the family.
Prayers sent for Speichers family. They have been through enough.
If they have found any remains, they belong to someone and their family deserve better than this.
BTTT!!!!!!!
POW * MIA bump!!!
Just DAMN!!! Prayers... RIP
I sure hope someone has gotten in touch with First Coast News to light into them. How would they feel if this were their family?
Prayer bump.
First Coast News
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- First Coast News has learned a body has been found in Iraq and DNA testing is underway.
Multiple sources tell First Coast News Captain Scott Speicher's family has been notified.
They will not disclose the details of why they believe these are his remains only to say they have reason to feel confident these are his remains.
Thank you for the ping... I have been praying for this family to receive word of Scott's fate... this is just so tragic. I hope they receive information soon, somehow, someway.
There are so many POW's that will never be accounted for...it just breaks my heart. I can't begin to know all the politics involved and I know there are many things I'm not aware of, but it hurts to think that our government hasn't done all it could have done in the past. I must say I have some hard feelings towards Kerry for some of this too, at least as far as the Vietnam Vets. I was so hoping it would be good news on Speicher. I remember seeing some posts from his brother on some boards a couple of years ago, begging...pleading for help. His family needs some closure.
You can meet my POW at http://moonpie.home.att.net/fred.htm
That's why I love FreeRepublic. Even if we're mislead, verification starts immediately and retractions are quick.
My prayers go out to all POWs and their families, may God ease their pain.
Thanks for the ping!
Ditto.
I'm willing to bet that the "sources" for this story are NOT government investigators, but the same frauds and shills that grabbed onto the story of Scott Speicher when their phony Vietnam POW stuff started getting too old to hustle money from.
There is a certain subspecies of con-artist that went around in the 1980s and 1990s, telling families of Vietnam MIAs that they had "proof" that their loved ones had been captured by the Vietnamese. These folks latched onto the Speicher story, and told all manner of conspiracy-laden drivel to various audiences of patriotic Americans. Personally, I feel these folks are lower than whale feces.
