James Belushi Files Suit Against Actress Julie Newmar

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 6) - James Belushi has sued his next-door neighbor, actress Julie Newmar, accusing her of a "campaign of harassment" to drive him from his home.

In a lawsuit filed Nov. 2, the 50-year-old actor claims Newmar vandalized his estate by destroying a fence and landscaping. He also contends she bad-mouthed him to neighbors and friends, spied on his family and caused a nuisance by playing loud music directed at his backyard.

A telephone number for Newmar, who played Catwoman in the 1960s television series "Batman," was not immediately available. A call to Belushi's lawyers was not returned Saturday night.

The suit seeks an injunction against the actress as well as damages of at least $4 million plus attorneys' fees, saying her actions caused emotional distress and harmed Belushi's reputation and career.

"Newmar has engaged in a malicious and premeditated campaign to prevent and destroy Belushi's quiet peace," the suit says.

I worked in a hotel that hosted a Batman convention. Julie Newmar was there for three days and got smashed in the bar every night.

I can't imagine a more productive activity at a Batman convention. The real question is why wait for nightfall?

Wow this thread drew the rule pretty fast. Which Catwoman was Newmar? The best---and the biggest. She also had one of the 14 title roles in Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. She was the horny one. Dorcas.

I was going to ask if Newmar invested well on syndication checks

My assumption was that she invested well. She's supposed to have a high IQ and be a successful business person.

Did a quick Google and found that some of my impressions were wrong, and some right. The family may have been comfortable, but probably not wealthy. Her IQ is good, but not outrageous. Anyway, here's what I found:

Born Julia Chalane Newmeyer, she is the daughter of an engineering professor and a former Ziegfeld girl. So maybe, she jokes, her vital statistics-a 38-23-38 figure and a 135 IQ-were genetic. Newmar, now 65, acts on occasion if the role amuses her, such as in the recently completed If...Dog...Rabbit, a film directed by Matthew Modine. But her priorities are her Los Angeles-based real-estate business and her 17-year-old son.

"How I think of myself is as a kind of producer, but I don't make films," she says. "I find people who are creative, and they become my tenants. I now have the finest cake-maker in all of Southern California, the finest interior designer. I have some of the best screenwriters and photographers living in my buildings. I have a wonderful restaurant. I've started art galleries. It satisfies my creative side, even though I'm behind the scenes."

I can't imagine a more productive activity at a Batman convention.

Imagine the famous Saturday Night Live Star Trek skit with William Shatner....only the attendees being much geekier.

On the plus side, Frank Gorshin was there and he's a class act.

A bad actor... who achieved noteriety by being the brother of a famous comedian/heroin-addict who actually HAD some acting ability.

'James', is given work out of respect to his dead brother.

Belushi is a Republican.

Well I glad that SOMEBODY finally explained that.

Back when I was a kid in the late '50s and early '60s, I can remember not understanding what all the fuss about Julie Newmar was about. (Of course, I figured it out a few years later.) But that reminds me, I was watching an old movie last night with Marlene Dietrich. And I still can't figure out why she was such a box office star. Sheeeeeesh, she sang a half-dozen songs or so, and her voice is HORRIBLE.

Jim Belushi is a Republican in Hollywood with a popular traditional family values TV show on ABC. Say no more. Say no more.

This is the real Stupefyin' Jones

Not a bad facsimile, for a real human being, that is.

I'd love to have seen them try to put a Schmoo on screen back in 1959.

Except that it's Green, the Robin Williams remake of "The Absent Minded Professor," re-titled Flubber, came pretty close.

Agreed. But what explains the career of Tom Arnold?

I'm glad someone else noticed that.

I never could figure out the appeal of Greta Garbo, either.
