Mount St. Helens Sprouts Magma Extension
ABC ^ | 11/5/04 | ABC

The new lava lobe inside Mount St. Helens' crater has sprouted a piston-like protrusion the size of a 30-story building glowing red at night.

"The magma is pushing the plug upward. It's going high in the sky," said hydrologist Carolyn Driedger of the U.S. Geological Survey at the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, about 50 miles from the southwestern Washington mountain.

One section of the new lobe has risen by 330 feet in the past nine days, Driedger said Friday. Exact dimensions are not yet known but will be determined from photos taken Thursday.

"It seems like every time you think you know what's going on, (the volcano) twists and does something different," said Jeff Wynn, chief scientist for volcano hazards at the observatory.

Look at the pic following your comment.

The lava dome is 500 feet tall and a third of a mile wide. The new activity is on the far side of the dome, where the glacier was.

djf -- Thanks for explaining and telling me about those new photos. I took a peek at the St. Helen's site and did some searching. They have some images posted of the new dome. But it does not look to be anywhere near 30 stories high to me. Of course, distance could throw off my perspective.

Images from Nov. 4th are available here:

They had a really good shot this morning on CNN showing the glowing dome. It's farther back that I thought. You could see it really well in the aerial shot...

Am I the only one who finds it interesting that St. Helens along with volcano's in Iceland and Mexico are acting up along with some very strong earthquakes from Japan to California.

I located two Volcano web sites that update every day:

First site has "40 volcano cams" but I did not check them out. Iceland volcano apparently went off again today November 6th:

Major volcano web site with many links:

I know that red magna has to be a huge area, it looks like a campfire in the distance.

I wish my perception skills were better. If I had gone to the Mt. when KV was younger like I wanted to it sure would help me relize now the magnitude of things.
