San Diego surfer leads for mayor

Donna Frye, a surfer who sports long blond hair and refuses to get a driver's license, is riding a wave of write-in votes for mayor that could sweep aside two graying 60-something Republicans and carry her into City Hall. The surf-shop owner has capitalized on a confluence of circumstances, including a pension scandal that has shaken the city financially.

The votes have not been completely tallied, but so far, the write-in ballots lead with 35 percent of the vote; Mayor Dick Murphy has 34 percent. The write-ins are expected to be overwhelming in favor of Frye, 52, who said she is extremely optimistic she will win once all the ballots are counted.

Hmmm, AP, what an absolutely bigoted, ageist description. Graying? What other changes are their bodies going through, age spots? Thinning hair? Wrinkles?

And this somehow classifies them as being what? Older? Out of touch? More experienced and worldly perhaps? No, you'd never credit society's elders with that, but will always tout youthfulness.

And the fact that the surfer is blond means what exactly, in terms of policy and leadership? She refuses to get a driver's license, but your story doesn't say whether she drives. Does she? Is she openly breaking the law? That would be ironic given the fact that she ran against the law-breaking of the incumbents.

yeah shes owns a surf shop in Ocean Beach. O.B. to the locals. O.B. is the stoner mecca of the area. Used to be quite common to see bumper stickers that said "U.S. out of O.B.". She was just on TV. Doing some weird kind of "touch thumbs greeting" with the reporter. Taking the mike and interviewing the reporter. Freeking weirdo.
