Radnor is a shocker, althoug I suspect a bit of that change was heavy voting by Villanova students.

A lot of the Delco towns that went for Kerry -- Upper Darby and Ridley -- are big blue collar towns with heavy GOP registration but not your typical RINO.

Chester, of course, is black.

Check out Chester County. Radnor seems to have followed the trend in Tredyffrin and Easttown up the Main Line.

Chester is Suffolk, Montgomery is Westchester, and Delaware is Nassau. Unless the steel belt turns into West Virginia, a Bush type candidate just can't win in Pennsylvania.

It is quite amazing the Lower Merion is so Dem. It has some of the richest precincts in the US. We have come a long way baby since the 1950's.

By the way, thanks for all your fine efforts. If I ever get to the City of Brotherly Love, I would be pleased to take you out to dinner.

Its right there with Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia - Ward 9.

Bush 1,529 to Kerry 7,392 - 17.14%-82.86%

Chestnut Hill is the wealthiest neighborhood in the city.

The worst parts of Lower Merion are the Bala Cynwyd, Haverford, and Ardmore areas - roughly the souther half of the township. The Gladwyne area to the north is still extremely Republican, roughly 60-40 by voting, but of course more sparsely populated because of the large estates

What was the vote in Bryn Mar(sp)? I have seen aerial photos of some of those estates.

Ya, I was amazed by Chestnut Hill. I assumed that it was maybe about 50% middle class black or something.

Perhaps this just underscores that the Democrats are the Party of the wealthy elite and the welfare class, while the Republicans are the party of the upper middle, middle, and lower middle class - the worker bees of the country.

I find it fascinating that a row-house/working class/union neighborhood like Port Richmond, South Philly, or Mayfair is more Republican - even with a majority in many precincts - than Lower Merion. And yet we are the "party of the rich", while they represent the "workers".

Perhaps we will finally come a full circle to the 1890's-1920's period, when the Republicans claimed the allegiance of farmers, small business owners, and workers, while the Democrats had the organized ethnic grievance classes as their base. Even back then, we had the patronizing scene of the Democrats running Wall Street elitists like Cox and Roosevelt and calling the Republicans running ordinary Joe types like Harding and Coolidge the party of the rich.

There are some large apartment complexes with a lot of minorities that were developed along the fringe of Chestnut Hill bordering Springfield Township. BUT, although those two precincts vote about 15-85 Democrat, the rest of the precincts are no better than 30-70 Democrat, and most at 20-80.

I was considering Bryn Mawr as part of the Gladwyne area north of the middle of the township (on a map, draw a line directly across from where the township takes a slight jog on its western boundary. Its roughly 60-40 too. Registration is actually more along the lines of 60-30-10, +/-5 points in those categories. Its rather indistinct in my mind where these specific areas begin and end.

It just reflects the fight over cultural issues. There was a different dynamic back then, with protectionism and racism and the detritus of the civil war in play. I suspect that this cultural conflict will fade in time, as compromises are found, however difficult. But probably the mean income gap between Bush and Kerry voters was smaller than in any election between a Republican and Democrat in history - ever (the South back then was dirt poor, which distorts the numbers admittedly), and maybe the median income gap as well, althought that is more iffy.

Call me crazy but if Toomey were on the ticket it might have made a difference. Bush lost the Northeast and Lehigh Valley too. I think Pat could have switched 100,000 votes.

At least he would have campaigned for Dubya.

Bryn Mawr is a postal address not a municipality. Most of it is in Radnor Township (Delaware County). A little is in Haverford Township.

Ironically most places that have a Haverford P.O. are in Lower Merion.

Ya, probably crazy. Toomey would have probably lost, and certainly would not have affected the presidency count much.
