Dems search for new approach (Democrats have a bad case of the blues after seeing so much red.)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- After losing back-to-back presidential elections, Democratic leaders are trying to figure out how to make the party more relevant to mainstream Americans and keep it from slipping into perpetual minority-party status.

And the task is daunting, many Democratic consultants and leaders agree.

Republicans have cut deeply into formerly Democratic areas in rural America, the Sunbelt, and among Hispanics, the nation's fastest-growing minority group. They have made gains on "family values" issues, winning over social conservatives who previously voted Democratic on economic issues, while keeping their advantage on national defense. (Small inroads make difference for Bush)

"We were on a tough playing field," said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, suggesting Republicans had made inroads among socially conservative former Democrats by emphasizing "wedge issues" like gay marriage and abortion. (Democrats debate what went wrong)

Ballot measures in 11 states to ban gay marriage also helped boost turnout for Republicans.

Democrats also have no strong leader to pull the party out of the wilderness.

Their "new" approach: Lie like hell. Pretend to be not elitist while pushing surrogate decision-making as general policy.

I want those states too come 2008. In the mean time I want 4 conservative Supreme Justices appointed this term, 60 seat majority in 2006. How is that for more to lose by the Democrats?

For 2008, the presumptive leading presidential candidates are New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, a Northeastern centrist and one of the most polarizing figures in American politics,

The spin has already started.

They want to be taken seriously again? Telling Hollyweird to take a hike would be a good start.

And from the original post:Democratic leaders are trying to figure out how to make the party more relevant to mainstream Americans

But they are only talking about APEARING to be more relevant. They still don't get that their ideas are wrong for America, only the marketing technique. Dog poop in a pretty wrapper is still dog poop!

Ford & Obama represent the future of the Democratic party. If they treated Zell's manifesto as free, 100% accurate market research, and adopted it lock, stock & barrel, we'd finally have an opposition party on our hands.

They may not pull it together by 2008, but at some point, a competitive opposition party will emerge. The only way it can be competitive, however, is to follow Zell's list.

If the Dems think they got 'out-Christianed', they're gonna have to purge the party of all the anti-Americans and try to 'out-patriot' the Republicans. Until the crazy libs are shoved out into a fringe left group (the Greens?), we're just going to keep cleaning their clocks.

The reason for the failure of the Democrats to get Kerry elected is due to their ignorance of the character of President Bush.

They made the issue about DEMOCRATS vs. REPUBLICANS.

The issue was not that Bush was a Republican, and therefore he was the bad guy that Democrats insist Republicans are.

The issue was George Bush's character as an individual.

The Democrats picked a man to support whose character had 'nuances' that many voters do not like. His campaign staff went all out to try and convince the public that he had the 'traits' that the people desired, when in truth, he did not.

He tried to HIDE his flaws, and stage having traits he did not.

President Bush has never tried to hide his traits or flaws.

He has always responded to critcisms (now and when running for governor) by stating that his record is open and available to the public. He has never tried to defend his character for that reason. He doesn't have to.

He has stood his ground on his personal convictions and political convictions, even when it would risk his 'popularity'.

I didn't vote for President Bush because he was a Republican. I voted for him because of who HE WAS.

He emulated the highest ideals of the REPUBLICAN PARTY. Some Republicans do, some don't. Some Democratic politicians emulate the ideals of the Democratic party, but I think it reasonable to say MOST DON'T.

THAT IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. THAT IS WHY THEY LOST MORE THAN THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT, this time.

The behavior and words of the lunatic libs like Pelosi Galore after the election will damage their party even more.

Americans hate whining losers, and they are seeing the rotten side of life's losers.

Keeping whining Pelosi.
