If pop culture is a reflection of a nation's values, then the signs of a Bush victory were there a long time ago for anyone to see.
There've been two runaway box-office surprises this year: Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" and Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ."
The Bush political team intuitively understood the tone of the U.S. voters much better than the media did. To be honest, I still don't quite understand how certified media junkies like me could have been so wrong.
I read the New York Times (NYT: news, chart, profile) and the New Yorker religiously. I watch CNN (TWX: news, chart, profile) and the networks' evening news programs as well as the gabfests on Sunday mornings, too.
Go figure.

The answer is right there in front of you, yet you don't see it.
He still does not get it.
NYT, CNN, etc are NOT a reflection of the culture.
They are a fiction of the cultural ELITE.
Here in lies the problem. This man is rotting his brain... Try going to Church on Sunday morning to see what life is all about.
"I still don't quite understand how certified media junkies like me could have been so wrong. I read the New York Times (NYT: news, chart, profile) and the New Yorker religiously. I... "
Question asked. Question answered.
I read the New York Times and the New Yorker religiously. I watch CNN...
How interesting that she answered her own question in the next sentence. I wonder if she realizes what she said?
Idjit doesnt even realize he is in a media cocoon! ... too funny!
New York Times and New Yorker: Pravda for Liberals.
Hmmmm.... You think he should start reading other media?
and how could I be so wrong?
Hehehehehehehe
So, in other words, you read the same crap spewed from different sources, and then wonder why you don't understand the majority of people in this country.
Gawd, these people are clueless.
Put down the New York Times and listen to talk radio.
Well, it's right in front of him - The Passion MADE what 300,000 MILLION dollars in the same amount of time that
F 9/11 .... made 113,000 Million .... NOW think about where that money was made and WHO went to see each MOVIE.... F9/11 made MOST of its money off of Al Qada and HAMAS .....
Passion MADE most of it's MONEY in THE USA ......
THINK ABOUT THAT!!! That's why the MEDIA and people who listen to them and believe them are living in the TWILIGHT ZONE!!!
I read the New York Times and the New Yorker religiously. I watch CNN and the networks' evening news programs as well as the gabfests on Sunday mornings, too
"To be honest, I still don't quite understand how certified media junkies like me could have been so wrong?"
If it were a snake it would have bit him.
what's with this "bad economy" stuff - the economy is doing remarkably well - the lib's would feel better about themselves if they could just admit it
I think she is being sarcastic. She is pointing out that the reason she missed everything about the election is precisely because she was reading only the Liberal sources.
It largely comes down to the amazing power of the rural vote for conservative family values.
Values drive how you approach any solution even when you don't yet know of the problem yet to come. Values determine how your character will grow as you work through situations.
People in rural areas realize you can fully trust another if you can discern their value base.
Kerry never showed a solid set of values or core principles. Consequently, those who still understand character knew he could not possibly be a good fit for president.
I generally fear we are losing this "uncommon sense". However, for now, we are safe.
It could be argued that Bush was completely successful by every measure in his first term EXCEPT in his attempts to reach out to the Bush Haters.
"Wal-Mart Republicans?"
That is what he now call the Religious Right?
Oh sure. He understands us.
