Hil won't squelch chatter on '08 bid
New York Daily News ^ | 11/05/04 | MAGGIE HABERMAN

Sen. Hillary Clinton refused to squelch talk yesterday about whether she has her eyes on the White House after John Kerry's loss made her the Democrats' insta-front-runner for 2008.

"Oh, I'm having the best time being the senator from New York," was all Clinton would say in her first appearance since Election Day when asked by reporters if she would be the new standard-bearer for the Democratic Party.

Clinton spoke hours after her colleague, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) - who is often overshadowed by the former First Lady - called her the front-runner for '08. While pundits say her chances to run for President herself would have virtually disappeared with a Kerry victory, her allies say she's not thinking about that.

She said yesterday she was "disappointed" by the loss.

"I worked hard for Sen. Kerry," said Clinton, who visited several states for Kerry in the final week, although Team Kerry had been reluctant to tap her earlier because of her spotlight-stealing star power.

"He ran a strong campaign," she said at Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, where she arrived more than an hour late to introduce a lecture there.

"He fell a little short, but it was a tremendous effort. I'm looking forward to having him back in the Senate, and we'll continue to work together," she said, adding that she was "pleased" that Bush said he plans to reach out to Dems.

"In a second term I would hope that the President and his team would be more willing to listen to people with different ideas and different points of view, and to forge some common ground," she said.

President Bush's win had Democrats scrambling to fix their damaged party. It also had political watchers gearing up for a potential rematch between Clinton and Rudy Giuliani.

Giuliani ran against Clinton briefly for Senate in 2000, but he dropped out after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. But since Sept. 11, 2001, made him a national star, he's considered by many the best man to beat her in 2008.

Giuliani, whose name has surfaced as a potential candidate for U.S. attorney general in Bush's next term, made no public appearances yesterday. His spokeswoman said he's happy with the job he has running his consulting firm.

Clinton, one of her party's biggest stars, is up for reelection in 2006, and Republicans have made unseating her a priority, in part to cripple any potential presidential run by her.

That has sparked speculation that she could be challenged by Gov. Pataki, or even Giuliani.

Won't ever happen; way too polarizing and would finally kill the party.

Hillary likes to play woman of mystery when it comes to this topic. If she runs and if she wins has a lot to do with what happens in the next four years. As it stands right now we do have a mandate but we can very easily shot ourselves in the foot with it. If we go at this with arrogance or too heavy handed there will be a backlash. We need to get our programs through however at the same time we need to be courting the more conservative elements in the Dem party. Remember the down fall of Newt? It should stand as a lesson of what to avoid. Of course no matter what we do they are going to hate us but let's face it Bush would not have won this election without a lot of cross over from the Dem party. There are a lot of right leaning Dems but they could switch back easily if we are not diplomatic. I am in hopes that the Dems will continue to pander to their nut wing factions and keep kissing up to Hollywood. They are cutting themselves of from important elements in their own party. It is a good thing to see them broken up in small, nasty, vocal competing groups. They are just hurting themselves and it makes them much easier to beat 2008

Pretty sad that this Hillary 08 stuff is becoming news only hours after Bush voctory. Why can't we just enjoy the Bush victory and stop fretting about Hillary for a while.
I don't intend to let this woman bother my mind for the 2 decades in which she pollutes US politics.

But since Sept. 11, 2001, made him a national star, he's considered by many the best man to beat her in 2008.

If the Republicans run Giuliani against Hitlary in '08, they will be handing her a victory. Giuliani is as liberal as they come - pro-abort, pro-'domestic unions', pro-stem cell .... and like Kerry, is another CINO (Catholic In Name Only).

Giuliani made a serious gaffe last week, during an interview on MSNBC. Discussing the missing armaments, he accused the troops. Ooops - on video and audio tape. That would come back to haunt him in any campaign he undertakes. Giuliani is NO Bush!

Catholic Ping - please freepmail me if you want on/off this list

What a lying cow she is.

She was happier than Dubya that Kerry lost.

She's been running for the Dem nomination for four years...just didn't have the guts to run this time.

It must suck to be Chuckie. He just won re-election to the Senate by a margin that would make Castro blush, and all anybody wants to talk to him about is Hillary!.

But seriesly, let's inaugerate this President before we start electing the next one, shall we? It's gonna be a loooooong four years, with it being about Hillary! at every turn...
